Planning Committee Minutes

February 6, 2008

 

Present:  Karen Cohn, Gloria Thornton, Neil Gendel, Stephanie Manfre, Marie Hoemke (on phone)

 

  1. ATF Fiscal Matters

 

General Fund

·        $5,000 available in GF professional services budget for Alicia Culver to research child care alternative products meeting state regs for disinfection and sanitizing (bleach, etc.) Neil working with Gateways to Quality on alternatives to bleach, disinfectants. Also working with CPAC.

·        Camera purchased for MOH; Money also spent on thermographic camera training for DBI, MOH. 

·        Money set aside for SFUSD Custodial Services, Martin Escalante doesn’t want the money until he buys the products, which may be in April.

·        CPMC also interested in helping pay for more schools to purchase green cleaning products, but Martin won’t quantify the amount needed  to expand number of schools in pilot program.

·        PSAs being made (money in BC budget will be used for promotion on WAD).  Karen speaking with BAYCAT, community organization in Bayview that teaches people how to work in Media field.  Karen got quote for 3 projects (1 with/ MOH, 1 w/ Lead program, 1 w/ Lifetime Transportation)  Karen would like committees permission to use money for lifetime transportation project- will do PSA’s, audio, and print ads

·        Spirometers to be purchased for sites involved in KP grant

·        Repro- orders have been made

·        Breathe contract- $3,000 for healthy housing trainings- mold class an option, stakeholder convening doesn’t seem feasible by June, as legislation won’t be before the Board.  Karen will plan mold training before June.  Contract also includes teaching kits for trainings.  Karen needs flier and sign-in sheets for trainings that have occurred. Props and teaching kits need to be purchased. Karen will review contract deliverables with BC staff. 

 

  1. Sustainability

·        Emily Reogers from Supervisor Maxwell’s office is working with City Attorney on draft extension legislation

·        Need bylaws vote at February 2008

·        Work plan discussion for February

·        Can an overture be made by BC to Wellness?

·        Plan A- $ from general fund for PT staff, Breathe looks for grants

·        Plan B needs to be made regarding lack of funding for staff regarding organizational structure, committees need to look at reduced work plan w/ decreased funding- potential for Karen’s department to play a small coordinator role (Stephanie to resend workplan activity notes to Karen)

·        Marie wants to ensure that Board Report to community re: schools work needs to happen- Karen points out that the report card could be used as an end of year report, once expanded to present to the Board of Supervisors

 

  1. CAFA Report Card Submittal

·        Has been submitted to CAFA- will hear back from CAFA re: edits

 

  1. World Asthma Day

·        Barbara Spark- EPA is interested in WAD event, could introduce TfS Coordinator and Report Card, Karen suggests honoring all the agencies mentioned in the Report Card, also Supervisor Maxwell- could make certificates to hand out. Karen scoping out Pier 1 location (free to city agencies) for reception. Karen thinks we should be calendared for the Health Commission.  ATF also should speak with Catherine Dodd (was health commissioner, now cabinet-level health advisor for Mayor)

 

  1. Kaiser Grant

·        Report due- no money expended as of yet. Karen will send report.

·        Is there a valid reason to apply for a 2008-09 grant? Are we eligible and for what?  Gloria will call Lara Salee. KP grants will be aligned in future with data and what the needs are.  Shows more for obesity and cardiovascular.

 

  1. CPMC Grant

·        Focus groups scheduled for April- St. Lukes, Laurel Heights, and Chinese Hospital

·        UCSF will submit to IRB

·        Kaiser- Peg will submit to IRB

·        Ask Dr. Tejeda about electronic signature? 

·        Lucille (Gloria’s intern) will get mailings ready and Karen will send

·        Need to research evaluation tools

 

  1. CARE Grant- EPA

·        Karen may apply- still researching. Applicant must be power sharing and collaborative (air, water, etc) Oakland organization already has grant working on Port of Oakland.  Karen spoke with another person at DPH re: children and biomonitoring (where are the pollutants, how do they get into our bodies). Gloria suggests that Karen speak with Nadine Burke about this project.
