I.

Review Agenda, Correct/Approve Minutes & Set Time

Not done.  Hold over.

II.

Building Capacity of Child Care Providers on Asthma

Conversations are being held with DCYF, Wu Yee, Children’s Council and others.  Need  to:

  • follow up with Janie Garcia from SF Head Start (SFSU)
  • follow up with Annie Tse from City College
  • ask DCYF for assistance getting onto these agendas
  • update Stacey Herrera SFUSD Child Development Programs
  • connect with Derrick Aoki

III.

Meetings and Environmental Objectives

1.      LibbyAlbertat DCYF is dealing with physical activity programs (including after school, Rec and Park sites, Shape up SF)

2.      Meeting with Trish Bascom,  SFUSD Chief of Support Operations

      Distributed follow-up letter sent to Ms. Bascom with meeting agreements.  Will   

      discuss further at next meeting.    

Environmentally Preferred Products– K. Cohn has connected with SF Department of the Environment (SFE), Chris Geiger,  to link to what they are doing; is working on hiring consultants and inviting SFUSD custodial staff to SFE trainings once products have been purchased. 

              Parent Outreach Tools and Plans

We have made good connections with some parent groups by distributing SFUSD Asthma Emergency Care Plan flyers to Parent Liaisons, Parents for Public Schools via Public Advocates, and UESF (teacher’s union).

N.Gendel has connected Public Advocates with UESF to provide training on the Williams Settlement in conjunction with ACLU.

Asthma Management

K.Cohnordered 100 more Medical Provider Emergency Care Plan folders.  All sites are to receive flyers and posters in English & Spanish.

 

J.Bazylannounced that American Lung Association of CA (ALA) has been working with SFUSD School Health Programs to apply for a $15k grant from ALA National to expand the Open Airways Program (OAS)to 15 more schools, to 50 total staff, and pull in 15 Learning Support Consultants, for Tools for Schools.   J. Bazyl invited to attend DAT meetings.

LouanneLeemay be new Asthma Nurse for SFUSD (former School District Nurse for Health Champions, a partnership of CA Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), SFUSD and Transamerica Foundation).   

 

Because of the news of the ALA-CA grant funding application, it was agreed that we all will be coordinated about Tools for Schools efforts to avoid confusion—transparency is important.

 

K Cohn will distribute to Karen Hardy, MD at Children’s Hospital, Oakland.

 

A.Nath to invite School District Nurse, Louanne Lee, to certification training, exam and meeting.

 

J.Bazylagreed

  • to deliver Emergency Care Plan folders to SFUSD nurses.
  • To share details of asthma-related grant funded agreements with ALA-CA & SFUSD-SHPD

V.  

Proposal regarding SFUSD Environmental Health Committee/DAT

The ATF vision is to identify and get all stakeholders together in a transparent process to institutionalize an effective system.  The SFUSD TfS Coordinator position may be filled by January 2007.   The ATF goals are to include having some authority to

1.       influence decisions in regard to the conditions in the school district,

2.       facilitate implementation of  the various programs and monitor progress,

3.       recommend that people within the district & the public are required to work through this committee regarding these issues. 

DAT may be scheduled to meet twice this year.  To bring up at DAT meetings:

1.       Asthma Management Flyers and Poster

2.        define roles and responsibilities,

3.        ?contract? goes through

4.       Check in with Ms. Bascom to connect with Martin Escalante. 

5.       Ask about substitute teachers and new teachers – how will they be oriented 

6.       We understand that substitutes and teachers have not seen Yellow First Aid Flip Chart

7.       To what extent can we have a specific training for Physical Ed teachers, obesity prevention issues?  (Prop H prioritizes PhysEd)
