2. Overall Housing Objectives
a. Neil indicated that he met with the API Family Resource Network. They indicated that they are committed to environmental hazards and health. Neil stated it seems that these issues are becoming a priority in the community.
b. Discussed need for solid definition of Healthy Housing. Once defined this can help with legislation and funding. The city has a green building initiative for new development.
c. Review Grid and Fine tune
1. Priority: Make existing low-income housing healthier
2. Need a financing mechanism to help owners provide healthy housing
3. Myrna described the National HUD grant she is applying for through MOH. She based her definition of healthy housing on the one developed by Asthma Regional Council. Developed protocols for addressing issues and indicated per unit costs. Focus is on private housing in the Southeast sector which has the lowest incomes with the highest number of children.
4. Members agreed it would be useful to begin by looking at Myrna’s proposal to develop a Healthy Housing Guidance document. This could help prioritize code violations in code books to create legislation as created for lead.
NEXT STEPS AGREED UPON:
- Work with HUD Proposal to develop Healthy Housing Guidance Document
- Help prioritize code violations (as indicated in #3-5 in Grid)
- Create legislation like lead & conduct education on Healthy Housing.
