Planning Meeting Minutes

March 5, 2008

Present: Karen Cohn , Neil Gendel , Gloria Thornton , Stephanie Manfre , Marie Hoemke (on phone), Anjali Nath (on phone), Kate Lorenzen and Sue- RAMP (on phone)

  1. Sustainability grid-

Kate and Karen discussed their changes to sustainability/future workplan grid. Proposal for future CAFA objectives to focus on toxic use reduction in the areas of homes and schools/child care. Health plans can take on clinical work.  RAMP will be working on child care objectives for it’s CEED grant- potential for collaboration.  Breathe California will take on “All about Asthma” related objectives. ATF will focus on toxics use reduction/bleach.

  1. AB 1472-

Healthy Places Act- Committee votes to support and send letter, Stephanie will send to ATF

  1. Future CAFA Funding-

CAFA will provide coalition funding for an additional 18-24 months.  RFP will be sent out to current coalitions in April.  Coalitions will be invited to apply for different amounts decided upon by the California Endowment (TCE) from 75-125K.

There will be a scale back in scope of work- ideally one area of focus (schools or homes) with 1-2 objectives that will be carried out over the grant period.  Coalitions will also focus on sustainability plan- define how coalitions will be sufficient without staff support and look at other sources of funding.  TA will be provided by RAMP.  TCE is concerned that coalitions have become so staff dependent.

  1. Fiscal expenditures-

Karen ordered spirometers for KP project. Committee will meet with Martin Escalante on 3/12 re: EPP purchasing.

Re: 2008-2009 general fund cuts, Karen asked if it would be a bonus if we gave back a portion of 2007/2008 funds.  Planning committee vetoed. Discussion held about looking for funding for Karen’s dept. to support healthy homes/asthma work.  Karen can talk to her supervisor to see if there is support and potentially submit a new proposal for funding.

  1. Report card- final draft being reviewed

  1. World Asthma Day-

Event will be held to honor “agents of change”. May 6 from 10-12 at Pier 1. Breathe California can handle PR and invitation.
