SPECIAL MEETING

FoxPlaza, 1390 Market St., Suite 410

DPHChildren's Environmental Health Promotion

In attendance: Marie Hoemke, Gloria Thornton, Karen Cohn, Anjali Nath

MINUTES

1.      Discussion about Tools for Schools

a.      Jackie provided an update on the meeting with Brother Leon which was scheduled per Commissioner Kim’s suggestion.

b.      Anjali will follow up with Nik to see how parent meeting went

c.       Anjali will follow up with Assistant Supt. about presenting to parent group

d.      Jackie provided an update on her plans for TfS trainings:  Is planning a training on May 28th for about 10 CDC sites.  Will focus on the database as a teaching tool and go through the TfS process which ends when work orders are submitted.

e.      Anjali will invoice for stipends for the number of trainees attending on May 28th.

f.        Discussed a way to honor TfS participating schools with certificate and gift certificate or healthy schools kits.  Jackie and Anjali to decide best option.

2.      Discussed preparation for June School Board meeting with asthma on the agenda.

a.      Commissioner Kim would like the board to know about the successes and challenges of the asthma action plan resolution.  What has district been able to accomplish, what are obstacles, and what they might need from ATF or elsewhere.  We would like to ensure that Jackie is able to provide an update on the progress of the Tools for Schools resolution passed as well.  Can possibly distribute packets to the Board members.

b.      Concern around data on numbers of children with asthma per IT reports.  Compared to CHIS data of expected number of kids with asthma the IT reports are not accurate.  Have already recommended to Commissioner Kim that SFUSD may want to look into a different database system that tracks health information including asthma.

c.       It is important to know the number of kids with asthma and whether they have emergency care plans on file as they are crucial in helping staff know how to deal with emergencies and TfS is important in preventing the facility from being the cause of asthma emergencies.  The Asthma Emergency Care Plans are also necessary because they are the only was to know about a child’s specific medications and the database helps us know whether the plans are updated every year.

d.      The ATF advocacy for these initiatives has helped get children ready to learn.  We do not remain confident that deaths will not occur at SFUSD sites without:

                                                              i.      Complete and accurate data entry; parents and teachers to collect forms; link primary prevention with clinical management (TfS and Care Plans)

e.      Group discussed possibly following up with schools who have successfully entered asthma data to understand what works for them in hopes of supporting those schools who are not entering data.  Successful schools seem to be Raul Wallenberg, Hoover, Presidio, Visitacion Valley

Outcomes/TO DOs:

1.      Anjali will email Commissioner Kim to ensure TfS resolution will be addressed at Board Meeting; inform that we had additional dialogue about AAP resolution; would like to speak at meeting – invited or public comment?

2.      Anjali will develop list of questions to ask schools successfully inputting data

3.      Karen will get Jackie’s Healthy Schools poster printed

4.      Karen will speak with DPH asthma outreach contact and head of Public Health Nurses to connect them for trainings in Bayview and with afterschool trainings through DCYF.
