Meetings and Environmental Objectives

a.      Meeting with Trish Bascom, SFUSD and review follow-up letter

Anjali provided a draft letter outlining meeting agreements.  Neil reiterated that we need Supt. Chan to help us work with Facilities Staff and help us overcome barriers.  We need Supt Chan to give directives to head of Facilities to ensure follow through and success.   TfS- Karen spoke with Vicki Wells who spoke with a DPH manager to follow up on recruiting and hiring a 0.5 FTE District TfS Coordinator.  Possible to hire a full time coordinator for less time.

EPPs- State occupational asthma program expressed need to do air samples of household cleaning products.  Confirmed that products being used by SFUSD contain “asthma-gens.”  Karen will ask her to provide additional information that we can pass on to Ed Ochi.  She might be able to help us get buy in for consultant to be used.  Other states and school districts are doing this successfully.  Products can be purchased at a discount. The more we can document what is an asthma-gen the more specific can be in city ordinance.

State group uses NIOSH info about research on products.

-Karen and Neil working to get parents and teachers to nominate their school

Williams Settlement-Attorneys Neil works with want to do training in school district on Williams Settlement.  Coleman, UESF wants to be trained.  Anyone who has suggestions for people who can be trained please pass on to Neil.  State policy is proposed to change Williams Settlement terms to a grant program versus reimbursement as it is now.  SFUSD actually sent a staff member to a training in Alameda to assist them with applying for Williams funds.

We need to advocate for a strong environmental health committee with parents, union folks, etc.

Discussed recommendations for having and environmental working committee.

Agreed to have SFATF submit a proposal to expand DAT to address environmental health issues effectively.
