Overview of Work (2012-2019)

MDC Letters of Support:

  • The Council worked with the San Francisco Youth Commission in support of their resolution to the San Francisco Unified School District and Board of Education that promoted the development of an educational curriculum that teaches students with and without disabilities about inclusion and emphasizes the need for accommodations for students with disabilities.  
  • A letter of support to the Small Business Commission regarding Supervisor Katy Tang’s legislation adding Chapter 11D to the Building Code. The legislation would expand access requirements for small businesses and other entities that serve the public, requiring commercial buildings with primary entries and path of travel into any existing buildings be made accessible for people with disabilities.
  • A letter of support for the Dignity Fund that would set aside funding from property taxes for services for Seniors and adults with disabilities in the City and County of San Francisco.
  • A letter to the BART Board of Directors regarding recommendations on access and accessibility modifications for BART’s new train car prototype.

MDC Input/Public Meetings Talking Points:

  • The Council provides input and/or speaks at public meetings on a variety of topics ranging from disability access, policies, and citywide initiatives including: Free Muni, Vision Zero, BART’s accessibility initiatives and new fleet, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), Affordable Housing Data Portal, SF DAHLIA (San Francisco Database for Affordable Housing Listing, Information and Application), Affordable/Accessible Housing, Employment, and Transportation Network Companies (TNC’s) like Uber.

Additional Contributions:

  • Developed a publication called: “A Technical Assistance Manual for Including People with Disabilities in Mass Care Services” which has been incorporated into the overall City College of San Francisco Emergency Plan.
  • Regular work with the SF Tech Council to promote employment opportunities for the disabled community, including serving on a sub-committee within the Council that meets monthly.
  • Work closely with the SF Rec & Parks Dept. to identify the City’s accessible playgrounds for the public, encourage greater accessibility of both grounds and equipment, increase the number of programs and supports for kids and adults with disabilities, facilitate the sharing of para-professionals between SFUSD and Rec & Parks, and increase the accessibility of structures at the City’s family camp near Yosemite (Camp Mather).
  • Working with SFMTA and SFUSD to approve Caregiver Permits for aides who ride the bus with SFUSD students.
  • Serving on the Disabled Access and Functional Needs Committee.
  • Serving on the Adult and Disabled Friendly Working Group dealing with new and innovative projects for disabled and senior adults.

  • #2015-02 – Supporting the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) plan to adopt Vision Zero, a three-point action plan to reduce traffic fatalities to zero by 2024
  • #2013-01 – Affordable and Accessible Housing for People with Disabilities and Seniors
  • #2015-01- Supporting the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) expansion of the Free Muni program to include low-income Seniors and people with disabilities
  • 2015-03- Supporting local control of rules and regulations regarding Transportation Network Companies (TNC’s)
