A new public space on Bartlett Street at 22nd Street!

In 2012, San Francisco Public Works, San Francisco Planning, and the Mission Community Market formed a partnership to create "La Placita," a new public space on Bartlett Street, between 21st and 22nd, in the heart of the San Francisco Mission District.

Building on the ideas of the Mission Streetscape Plan, a 2-year community-based effort led by the San Francisco Planning Department (2008-2010) and the more recent placemaking efforts of the Mission Community Market, La Placita provides a beautiful, safe and much needed public space in the heart of the Mission for a wide variety of community programs and cultural arts that support family health, promote small businesses, and bring diverse communities together.

The new space offers opportunities for community gatherings like the Mission Community Market, as well as smaller neighborhood activities that neighbors desired in MCM's community assessment, such as  health fairs, fundraisers, music and games.

La Placita includes permanent  canopies to support small businesses, market vendors or and smaller-scale community programming such as lunch time events, music or games. Outside of scheduled events, the design maintains through traffic to this block of Bartlett Street.

The proposed design dramatically improves public safety through the addition of new street lights, a narrower road, and traffic calming elements that include greening. Highlights of the design are: wider sidewalks, new trees and stormwater management gardens, unique paving, movable seating and opportunities for local art.

The project was funded by the 2011 Road Repaving and Street Safety Bond.
