B. Presentation from SFUSD’s Special Education Department
Presenter: Deidre Durling, Supervisor at the Special Education Department, SFUSD
(Document B)

Ms. Durling gave a presentation about SFUSD’s referral process for students in Special Education, shared the 3-year evaluation cycles, and explained the difference between regular special education program and the physical disability programs i.e. the 504 plan.

Ms. Durling also spoke about Professional Development days and Step by Step training programs offered to staff members at SFUSD, the mentorship program at Mission HS that help with students experiencing disabilities, and engaged in a discussion around how Special Education students can better be a part of the regular classrooms i.e. students going into classes and bringing Special Education awareness to regular classrooms, building philosophical empathy awareness for all students.

The committee members asked about the relationship between physical disability and 504 plan, IEP’s, and mental disabilities. A student with a physical disability would only be in Special Education if that disability impacted their learning. Commissioner Bernick asked if students have access to reviewing their previous IEP’s. Ms. Durling responded that she highly encourages students to be a part of the process; after all, who else knows better about the students’ learning style than themselves.

Ms. Durling showed the committee the website and the resources available there.

At the next committee meeting (January 2014), the team has agreed to review the Special Education presentation and identify the points made that can be included in their resolution. Ms. Durling expressed her support and happiness to work with the committee on this topic.

There was no public comment.
