  3. SFMTA Castro Station Elevator Project: Phase #2
    Tess Kavanagh, Project Manager, SFMTA
    Jane Chan, Architect, Public Works
John Dennis, Landscape Architect, Public Works

The project team reviewed the comments from their last informal review, along with the revisions made based on these comments. The team presented the project phasing, the glass elevator cab, the elevator maintenance strategy, reduction of size and visibility of the elevator structure, the silkscreened frit patterning proposed for the glass enclosure, and the use of clear glass to create a “beacon of light.” The team went on to present the street level improvements, which included widening the sidewalk, adding a curb ramp, replacing the plaza light fixtures, and regrading and replacing plaza paving. On the concourse level, the presented improvements included replacing fencing, providing new paving, replanting terraces and the concourse, and replacing and adding seating. Lastly, the team provided a plant palette and rendering of the elevator. In addition to the presentation, the team provided a model, glass and paving samples, and to scale prints for the Committee’s review.

The Committee expressed concern in design consistencies since the elevator portion of the Castro Station project would be designed and completed prior to the encompassing new Harvey Milk Plaza project. The Committee asked that the team provide more information regarding the maintenance of the glass elevator, including the cleaning schedule and proposed self-cleaning nanotechnology to be used. Additionally, the Committee encouraged the team to look at the proportionality of the fritting and spacing to investigate the ratio of transparency to translucency. Lastly, the Committee requested that the team provide elevations and details of the bridge support.

Motion to approve Phase #2 of the Castro Station Elevator Project contingent upon 1) further investigating the self-cleaning nanotechnology solutions that clean glass, 2) providing supplemental information regarding maintenance and cleaning schedule of the elevator, 3) studying proportion percentages and gradation of the frit pattern on the glass and providing specifications of the frit pattern, and 4) providing elevations and further details of the bridge support.
