President Ordeñana called the meeting to order at 12:33 p.m.

    President Ordeñana announced virtual meeting instructions.

    Commission Secretary Alyssa Ventre announced public comment instructions.

  3. Director’s Report
    (5:40)

    Director Remington reported on a number of activities including the City’s downtown activation plan, an update regarding Guaranteed Income Pilot and information on the Monumental Reckoning installation. He also shared details regarding upcoming press opportunities and noted his participation in a number of speaking engagements.

  1. San Francisco Symphony Agreement
    (18:00)

    Deputy Director Lee shared background information on the symphony agreement and explained the impacts of COVID on this agreement.

    Commissioners and staff discussed the impacts of COVID on arts programming around the City.

    Commissioner Collins, seconded by Commissioner Shiota moved to approve the motion as presented: Motion, pursuant to Charter Section 16.106(1), to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into an agreement with the San Francisco Symphony to support free virtual programs, outdoor concerts, and live performances in Davies Symphony Hall when permitted under state and local public health orders during the Symphony’s 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons for an amount equal to the Controller’s calculation of the ad valorem tax for FY 2021-2022 and FY 2022-2023, currently estimated to be $7,539,346.

  2. 2021-2023 San Francisco Artist Grants (SFA)
    (27:00)

    Deputy Director Lee explained that the motion would revise the name of six approved grantees to match the names in the supplier system to ease the payment process.

    Commissioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner Shiota moved to approve the motion as presented: Motion to amend the San Francisco Artist Grants (SFA) to the following individuals (authorized by Resolution No. 0503-21-100) and approve the revised legal names; and, to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into grant agreements for an amount not to exceed $20,000 at this time:
     
    Éamon McGivern, $20,000
    Kelly Falzone Inouye, $20,000
    Joanne Kreiter, $20,000
    Monica Magtoto, $20,000
    Vanessa Sanchez, $20,000
    Virginia Zolala-Tovar, $20,000

  3. Racial Equity Update
    (29:35)

    Senior Racial Equity & Policy Analyst Sandra Panopio gave an update on the Racial Equity Action Plan deliverables. Ms. Panopio and Secretary Ventre are working together on the land acknowledgment resolution and process. She said that the agency plans to create an internal commitment to how we’re supporting the Native American and American Indian community. Ms. Panopio added she’s identifying training facilitators for future all staff and commission racial equity training. She shared that the agency is looking to lead a truth and reconciliation process in order to understand how the Arts Commission has impacted various communities and to inform strategies moving forward. Direction Remington provided more background information on these efforts.

    Commissioners discussed the details of the citywide land acknowledgment process. They also discussed how to create infrastructure within a bureaucracy, the capacity of cultural centers and how to empower communities. They also gave feedback and suggestions on the future truth and reconciliation process. They asked about the cultural centers limitations and how to strengthen the centers.

  4. New Business and Announcements

    Commissioner Walker shared information about the redevelopment at the shipyard and the impact on the artists. Commissioner Shiota shared that OCII is invested in opportunities for local artists. Commissioner Walker asked for an update on the issue with the shipyard artists at a future meeting.
