      Visual Arts Committee Recommendations (November 28, 2018; link to agenda)

   5. Motion to approve and to accept into the Civic Art Collection the artwork entitled Auspicious Clouds | Heavy Fog, 2018, by Michael Arcega. The seven painted steel benches draw inspiration from cloud motifs found in traditional Chinese art and architecture. The artwork varies in height from 3 ft. to 4 ft., and in length from 5 ft. to 8-1/4 ft. The artwork was commissioned for the Department of Public Works Broadway Chinatown Streetscape Improvement Project, and is located along Broadway between the east end of the Robert C. Levy Tunnel and Columbus Avenue.
       
   6. Motion to approve and to accept into the Civic Art Collection the artwork entitled Points of Departure, 2018, by Scott Oliver. The three sculptural signposts feature a number of arrows pointing in all directions with place names and distances inscribed on them. Each place name is a response to a particular question associated with each post. The artwork consists of painted aluminum and steel, and measures approximately 13 ft. by 7 ft. The artwork was commissioned for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority Masonic Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project, and is located at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue.
       
   7. Motion to approve and to accept into the Civic Art Collection the following 65 artworks. Imagery for each original artwork was licensed and reproduced as a digital print on aluminum plate for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital Acute Care Building, Two-Dimensional Artwork Program.

   9. Motion to (A) rescind the approval of the purchase of the following artwork for display at the San Francisco International Airport: Grand Hyatt Hotel as recommended by the artist selection panel:
      Ala Ebtekar, Zenith (IV), 2015, acrylic over cyanograph on canvas, 72 in. by 125 in., $50,000 (part of Arts Commission Resolution No. 0507-18-149)
       
      and (B) approve the purchase of the following artwork for display at the San Francisco International Airport: Grand Hyatt Hotel:
      Ala Ebtekar, Zenith (VII), 2016/17, acrylic over cyanotype exposed to sunlight on canvas, quadriptych, 72 in. x 145 in. (72 in. x 36-1/4 in. each panel), $50,000, as approved by the Airport Commission (Resolution No. 18-0236).
       
   10. Motion to approve Watch Our Garden Grow, a mural design by artist Elaine Chu. The painted mural will be installed at Paul Revere Elementary School at 555 Tompkins Avenue, along an exterior wall on Tompkins Avenue and Banks Street. The painted mural will measure approximately 4 ft. by 11 ft. by 27 in. The project is funded by the Community Challenge Grant, and is sponsored by the Paul Revere Elementary School Parent Teacher Association; the painted mural will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.
        
   11. Motion to approve A Garden of Our Own, a mural design by artist Elaine Chu. The painted mural will be installed at Paul Revere Elementary School at 555 Tompkins Avenue, along a community garden gate entrance on Tompkins Avenue and Banks Street. The painted mural will measure approximately 27 ft. by 5 ft. The project is funded by the Community Challenge Grant, and is sponsored by the Paul Revere Elementary School Parent Teacher Association; the painted mural will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.
        
   12. Motion to approve the Final Design Phase deliverables (construction documents and final design drawings) by Jim Campbell and Werner Klotz (DBA White Light Inc.) for an artwork at Central Subway: Union Square Market Street Station.
        
   13. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Cheryl Haines Gallery for an amount not to exceed $35,000 for the submission of preliminary designs by artist Andy Goldsworthy for a project at Yerba Buena Island for the Treasure Island Art Program.
        
   14. Motion to approve the slate of artists selected for the 2019 Muni Art Program sponsored by SF Beautiful including Nick Cook, Arthur Koch, Bhavna Misra, Crystal Vielula, and Christine Weibel, each of whom will have 20 Muni buses to use as a canvas for their artwork which was designed in response to poems by Francisco X. Alarcón, Brenda Hillman, C. Dale Young, Jane Hirshfield, and Cedar Sigo, from January 1 through April 30, 2019.
        
   15. Motion for the Director of Cultural Affairs to approve an honorarium in the amount of $7,000 to Mik Gaspay for the research and development of his installation in the SFAC Main Gallery, opening January 25, 2019.
        
   16. Motion to approve the Design Phase deliverables (updated design and material sample) by Tahiti Pehrson for a suspended artwork at the 4th floor lobby of the San Francisco International Airport: Grand Hyatt Hotel.
        
   17. Motion to approve the Design Development Phase deliverables (artwork renderings) by THEVERYMANY for the entry lobby of the San Francisco International Airport: Consolidated Administration Campus Building.
        
   18. Motion to approve artist Miguel Arzabe’s conceptual design proposal for San Francisco International Airport: Grand Hyatt Hotel, pending the artist getting approval for copyrighted material.
        
   19. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into contract with Miguel Arzabe for an amount not to exceed $25,000 for design and fabrication of artworks for the San Francisco International Airport: Grand Hyatt Hotel, pending the artist getting approval for copyrighted material.
        
   20. Motion to approve the selected artist, Favianna Rodriguez, and her Design Development Phase proposal for Garfield Pool.
        
   21. Motion to approve the selected artist, Ramekon O’Arwisters, and proposal for the Southeast Health Center, Entry Lobby Wall, as recommended by the Southeast Health Center Artist Selection Panel.
        
   22. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into a contract with the selected artist, Ramekon O’Arwisters, for an amount not to exceed $112,350 for design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation consultation of a wall-mounted artwork for the Southeast Health Center.
        
   23. Motion to approve the selected artist, Ronald M. Saunders, for the Southeast Health Center, 2nd Story Glass Door Partitions, as recommended by the Southeast Health Center Artist Selection Panel.
        
   24. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into contract with the selected artist, Ronald M. Saunders, for an amount not to exceed $80,000 for design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation consultation of art glass for the Southeast Health Center.
        
   25. Motion to approve the Final Design Phase deliverables by Brendan Monroe for an outdoor mural for the Moscone Expansion Project, to be located on the south wall of the Paseo between 3rd Street and Yerba Buena Children’s Garden.
        
   26. Motion to approve the artist Phillip Hua and proposal for the 1550 Evans Southeast Community Center (“SECC”): Alex Pitcher Room, as recommended by the artist selection panel. Proposed design and budget are to be modified to reflect new placement in SECC: Main Lobby, as recommended by the artist selection panel.
        
   27. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into contract with the selected artist Phillip Hua for an amount not to exceed $300,000 for design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and consultation during installation of an artwork for the 1550 Evans Southeast Community Center: Main Lobby.
        
   28. Motion to approve the artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle (KACH Studio) and proposal for the 1550 Evans Southeast Community Center (“SECC”): Main Lobby, as recommended by the artist selection panel. Proposed design and budget are to be modified to reflect new placement in the SECC: Alex Pitcher Room, as recommended by the artist selection panel.
        
   29. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into contract with the selected artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle (KACH Studio) for an amount not to exceed $460,000 for design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and consultation during installation of an artwork for 1550 Evans Southeast Community Center: Alex Pitcher Room.
        
   30. Motion to approve, at the request of the Public Utilities Commission (“SFPUC”), the deaccession from the Civic Art Collection of Ned Kahn’s Rain Portal, 2012 (Accession #2014.4) due to unrepairable materials and systems failure. Rain Portal is currently installed in the entry of the Public Utilities Commission Headquarters at 525 Golden Gate Avenue.
        
   31. Motion to approve, at the request of the Public Utilities Commission (“SFPUC”), the disassembly and dispersal of materials making up Ned Kahn’s Rain Portal, 2012 following the expiration of a 90-day notice period in which the artist or a party authorized by the artist is given the opportunity to remove and relocate the artwork.

   1. Discussion: Public Comment on All Matters Pertaining to the Closed Session

Action: Vote on whether to enter into closed session and assert the attorney-client privilege to discuss existing litigation with legal counsel with the City as defendant pursuant to California Government Code Section 54956.9(d)(1) and San Francisco Administrative Code Section 67.10(d)(1).
