Susan Pontious
Action

Explanatory Documents: Artwork Image; Mock Ups; Conceptual Design Document Phase Deliverables
Presentation Time: Approximately 7 minutes

Artist Dana Hemenway presented updates to the conceptual design documents phase deliverables for her artwork at the San Francisco International Airport: Terminal 1 Center Public Art Project. Ms. Hemenway received feedback from Project Manager Justine Topfer and the Visual Arts Committee and made modifications to the design based on these comments. The top structure has been changed from three tiers to two tiers and is now fabricated out of a wood veneer. The artist retained the arc-shape of the original design as this detail responds to the architecture of the escalator bay. Upon the suggestion of the SFO conservation team, Ms. Hemenway sourced synthetic rope, which will be much easier to maintain and will last much longer than natural fiber. To add contrast and depth to the wood veneer structure, Ms. Hemenway added new minimalist ceramic forms with a speckled blue and white glazing along the strands. The macramé white extension cords and circular lighting elements at the ends contribute to the contemporary aesthetic of the overall design.

Commissioner Keehn called for public comment. There was no public comment.

Motion: Motion to approve the conceptual design documents phase deliverables for Dana Hemenway’s artwork, The Color of Horizons, for the San Francisco International Airport: Terminal 1 Center Public Art Project.

Presentation Time: 5 minutes

The Committee and THEVERYMANY were unable to connect during the meeting. The Commissioners and Ms. Pontious had a few comments and concerns about the current design that they wish to be addressed for the next Visual Arts Committee meeting. The comments are as follows:

The Commissioners thought the current form overwhelms the space and would like if the sculpture can be scaled back to give space more for the room to breathe.

The Committee would like clarification of the color and materials of the overall work. Will there be variations in the color white? Or will there be metallic material as in THEVERYMANY work Understress (Inria Institute, Rennes, France)?

The Committee would like clarification of ends of sculpture. Would it be similar to the reference photo of Under Magnitude (Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL) or will the ends be suctioned to the wall, as in Understress?

Commissioner Keehn called for public comment. There was no public comment.
