5. SFAC Galleries Spring/Summer 2022 Exhibitions

Galleries Director Meg Shiffler presented two upcoming SFAC Galleries exhibitions. An exhibition of 67 works by renowned photographer David Johnson will be presented at City Hall opening mid-May and running through the end of 2022. David is 95 years old and has an archive of more than 5000 images now housed at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library. The Bancroft is loaning the work for this exhibition. The artist’s work encompasses photographs of San Francisco’s vibrant Black communities in the Fillmore and Bayview Districts between 1945 – 1965. He also photographed celebrities, politicians, jazz clubs, and the Civil Rights Movement.

The SFAC Galleries is partnering with the Asian Art Museum and the San Francisco Art Institute to present Carlos Villa: World In Collision, opening June 18, 2022 in the SFAC Main Gallery. This exhibition is the first traveling retrospective of a Pilipino American Artist. Carlos Villa was an artist, curator, mentor/teacher, and community advocate. The works at the SFAC Main Gallery will be from the 1980s and 1990s and represent the period in which the artist pulled away from working for major museums and galleries and began to focus on creating work in community spaces about his personal history and the stories/legacies of Pilipino immigrants. The Galleries show will highlight paintings, video, and sculpture about ritual, ancestry, and community.

4. Balboa Park Upper Yard Public Art Design Approval

Public Art Advisor Lynne Baer presented the artwork Around the Way by Aaron De La Cruz, which will be installed at Balboa Park Upper Yard. The sculpture will be fabricated out of power-coated aluminum. The dimensions of the work are 24 ft. by 30 ft. The depth at the bottom of the sculpture will be approximately 1 ft. gradually expanding to 5 ft. at the top. The sculpture was designed with one continuous line, which is symbolic of the goal of Balboa Park Upper Yard of having multiple generations housed under the same roof.

Motion: to approve the design of the artwork Around the Way by Aaron De La Cruz to be installed at Balboa Park Upper Yard, located at the intersection of San Jose Ave. and Geneva Ave. The artwork is partially funded by the City of San Francisco. Mission Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) and The Related Companies of California (TRCC) will be joint owners of the affordable housing development and the artwork. Caritas Management Corporation (Caritas), a subsidiary of MHDC, will be responsible for ongoing maintenance. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.

6. Civic Art Collection

Senior Registrar Allison Cummings sought approval for a loan of Emmy Lou Packard’s artwork in the Civic Art Collection Morning in the Valley, to the exhibition Emmy Lou Packard – Artist of Conscience at the Richmond Art Center. The goal of the exhibition is to present the art of this remarkable artist, the values that it expresses and the world that she lived in. The show is scheduled for June 21, 2022 through August 19, 2022.

7. 2022 Art on Market Street Kiosk Poster Series

Program Associate Craig Corpora presented the twelve final designs by artist Gaia Weise for their series titled The Tale of Daisy and Gaia. For this work, Gaia created a dual narrative, of how they came to love San Francisco, and the discovery that their great-grandmother once lived here as well." Gaia’s great grandmother Daisy moved from Jamaica to San Francisco in 1918. While here, she met and married Edward Basil who was coincidentally also from Jamaica. Gaia interweaves their story of first coming to visit San Francisco with their family and falling in love with the City. They came back 7 years later to attend a pre-college summer program at SFAI, staying in the Bay Area and attending art school and earning an MFA in comics at CCA. Gaia alternates between their story and their great grandmother’s, depicting Daisy’s story in sepia tone and their story in vibrant color.

For the proposed plan, Comics 2.0, artists will have the opportunity to create graphic narratives centered around San Francisco. The content can be historical, personal, fantastical, fiction or non‐fiction, but the work should engage with and be inspired by the city of San Francisco.

9. San Francisco International Airport: Harvey Milk Terminal 1

Project Manager Zoë Taleporos presented two Cornelia Schulz paintings, K2 and K6, for purchase and display at San Francisco International Airport: Harvey Milk Terminal 1. In 2018, the Arts Commission approved the purchase of three artworks by Cornelia Schultz. These works were to be installed adjacent to five works by Frank Lobdell. However, that area was redesigned, leaving no room for the three Schulz paintings. Another wall has been identified for the Schulz works that is 23.5 ft. long. Adding two additional paintings from the series to this display would create a more balanced installation.

10. San Francisco International Airport: International Terminal Boarding Area G Recompose

Project Manager Marcus Davies presented the completed artwork When the Path Through the Atmosphere is Longer by Ranu Mukherjee installed in SFO’s International Terminal Boarding Area G Recompose area. The artwork measures 7 ft. 8 in. high by 40 ft. wide and consists of ten panels composed of laminated glass, silk and cotton sari cloth, UV inkjet printing, and aluminum composite.

The work is inspired by the feeling of being suspended in time and space during long-haul air travel and seeing two sunrises or sunsets in the same day. The image is collaged from printed sari cloth, a diasporic object that carries culture and moves with bodies. Included in the imagery are depictions of the arctic tern, known for its long yearly migration, and the hummingbird, native to the Americas.

Mr. Davies commended Ms. Mukherjee for skillfully navigating challenging fabrication techniques as well as complicated and meticulous construction integration, delivering a bright, graceful artwork that perfectly captures the experience of international travel.

11. Staff Report

Director of Civic Art Collection and Public Art Mary Chou stated that there are currently four open RFQ’s on the SFAC website and asked Commissioners to share them with their communities.

Ms. Chou also noted that the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Fire Station #35 artwork Bow by Walter Hood was held on Thursday, March 10^th.

There will be a lighting ceremony for the Jorge Pardo work Untitled at 7:00pm on Thursday, March 31^st at Van Ness Ave between Geary St. and O’Farrell St. and a ribbon cutting ceremony the following day on Friday, April 1^st.

Additionally, Ms. Chou announced that the application deadline for the 1844 Senior Program Manager position has passed and interviews will take place soon.
