JULY 25, 2012 REGULAR MEETING

 

The Police Commission of the City and County of San Francisco met in the Ingleside District, Our Lady of Visitacion School, 655 Sunnydale Avenue, San Francisco, at 6:06 p.m.

PRESENT: Commissioners Mazzucco, Marshall, Chan, Kingsley, Loftus

ABSENT: Commissioners DeJesus, Turman

(Commissioner Marshall arrived at 6:11 p.m.)

Commissioner Mazzucco welcomed the audience and asked the Commissioners to introduce themselves.

REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

a. Chief’s Report

- Review of recent activities

Chief Suhr reported on recent activities in the department. The Chief gave a brief update on crime statistics including recent crimes in the Asian community. Chief Suhr also talked about the recent officer-involved shooting in the Central District. Chief Suhr thanked Our Lady of Visitacion School for hosting the meeting.

b. OCC Director’s Report

- Review of recent activities

Director Hicks introduced herself and Sr. Investigator Edward McMahon. Director Hicks went on to talk about the duties and responsibilities of the OCC.

c. Commission Reports

- Commissioners’ Reports

Commissioner Mazzucco talked about the recent Promotional Ceremony and the press conference regarding the recent officer-involved shooting. Commissioner Mazzucco thanked the San Jose Police Officers present at the recent Breast Cancer Walk.

d. Commission Announcements and scheduling of items identified for consideration at future Commission meetings

ACTING CAPTAIN GREG YEE FOR CAPTAIN DANIEL MAHONEY, COMMANDING OFFICER OF TARAVAL STATION, TO ADDRESS THE COMMISSION ON POLICE ACTIVITIES IN THE INGLESIDE DISTRICT

A/Captain Yee addressed the Commission on police activities in the Ingleside District and went on to talked about crime statistics and the demographic of the Ingleside District.

Commissioner Mazzucco thanked the Pastor of Our Lady of Visitacion for hosting the meeting.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Sharon Hewitt thanked the Commission, Chief Suhr, and Mr. Henry Alvarez of the Housing Authority. She went on to talk about mental health issues. She went on to commend Commissioner Marshall for his support of the Ambassador Program. She asked the support of the Commission for cameras around the housing developments and asked for language access for all the residence.

Marlene Tran, Visitacion Asian Alliance, talked about recent immigrants to Visitacion Valley and talked about recent request to Captain Mahoney about how to better inform the community of what’s happening around the district.

Steven Currier commended Captain Mahoney for his work with CPAB. He went on to talk about the upcoming National Night Out on Tuesday, July 31

 

st, and went on to invite the command staff and commissioners to attend.

 

Mary Harris agreed with Mr. Currier in regards to Captain Mahoney and stated that they are very happy with Captain Mahoney. She went on to talk about recent shootings in the neighborhood and commended the Taraval Neighborhood Team (TNT).

Winnie (through interpreter) expressed her appreciation for the last year and a half for more police around libraries and school yards. She went on to talk about recent homicides and asked to be informed properly.

Mr. Paul Henderson, Mayor’s Office, expressed his excitement for meeting in his neighborhood and stated how important it is to have meetings like this one and commended the Commission for having the meeting in the Ingleside District.

Commissioner Mazzucco thanked Mr. Henderson for his behind the scenes work with the Mayor’s Office.

Sister Dunn, Daughters of Charity, thanked the Commission and the Chief and members of the Ingleside for their work with the community and keeping the community safe.

Mr. Henry Alvarez, Housing Authority, talked about what the Housing Authority is doing in regards to safety around housing complex and talked about public safety cameras, gun buy-backs, and other public safety strategies.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Commissioner Marshall, second by Commissioner Kingsley.

Thereafter, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
