Stephen Herman
Stephen Herman was appointed to the Mayor’s Disability Council by Mayor London Breed in 2019.
With an MFA from U. Mass., Amherst, Mr. Herman settled in San Francisco in 1972 with his partner, Michael Lipp. For 10 years he taught Creative Writing at City College of San Francisco and other English courses at USF and Skyline College. With additional coursework, he was credentialed to teach Business and Computer Classes and to serve as an Administrator in the California Community College System. In 1982, he moved into the administration at City College.
He held numerous administrative positions at City College from 1982—1985, including Interim Budget Director for two years. In 1985, he became Director of Administrative Services and eventually for the last ten years of his career he served as Associate Vice Chancellor under the Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration. He was a Chancellor appointee to the College Budget and Planning Committee and the Works of Art Committee for over 10 years.
He has served on numerous Boards and chaired the AIDS Health Project Advisory Board, served on the Human Right’s Commission, and co-chaired the LGBTQ Advisory Committee to the Commission, as well as Co-Chaired the Ryan Care Council for two years.
His experience in budget, planning, policy, the arts and various health issues is well documented.
He retired from City College after nearly 30 years in 2010.
