Minutes: Health and Wellness Committee

1. Call to Order
Meeting called to order at 5:05pm. Commissioners present: Davidson, Lau, Castaing, Lunsford, Erlikh. Staff present: Gillian Bogart.
2. Approval of Agenda
Agenda unanimously approved.
3. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda
There was no public comment on items not on the agenda.
4. New Business
A. Discussion re: Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008.
The committee reviewed legislation introduced at the statewide level which aims to provide systems of support for foster youth as they transition and ensuring that they have access to an education.
B. Discussion re: Scheduling a presentation by the Honoring Emancipated Youth Advisory Board
HEY, a local organization that serves emancipating foster youth has an advisory board, which facilitates a workshop about the challenges that arise as a young person emancipates from the foster care system. January 7th was noted as a potential time for the workshop.
C. Discussion re: Resolution urging the SFUSD Board of Education to address GLBT discrimination in the schools.
Commissioner Castaing introduced the drafted resolution and committee read and made minor adjustments to language. Commissioners discussed feasibility and potential challenges for each of the resolved clauses. Castaing will prepare a statement and present the resolution to the HRC LGBT working group for feedback before presenting before the full commission.
5. Unfinished Business
A. Reflection of Peer Health Educator Event
Commissioners discussed the Peer Health Educator Event, and talked about ways to improve it, for future events.
