A. Immigrant Youth Summit Debrief

Committee members discussed the strengths and areas to improve on of the Immigrant Youth Summit. Overall, all members are happy and satisfied with finally putting on the 1st ever Immigrant Youth Summit in San Francisco. However, members wanted to be realistic and discussed the challenges and areas that could be improved on should there be another Immigrant Youth Summit next year. Areas to improve on that was discussed included: venue not having appropriate space for students to break out into the sessions and group discussions, too many guest speakers, only one break out session per student for the day, more engaging, interactive activities to keep students constantly active and engaged entertainment through the summit so the students could stay awake, more coordination and work with teachers and schools before hand, outreach to a wider demographic of immigrant young people who face multiple barriers, and more time. All in all, committee members agreed that the summit was a success as it was the first youth led Immigrant Youth Summit, and they only had two months to plan it. Everyone was happy.

B. FY 2011-2012 Policy Priorities

Committee Chair Yang announced that she had to step out at 4:00 p.m. to meet with Adrienne Pon, Director of the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs. Yang apologized and had Committee Vice Chair Ontiveros facilitate the rest of the meeting.

Committee members then regrouped and discussed policy priorities for the committee. They include:

*spending a good amount of time to go over the student and teacher survey to get accurate data
*follow up with students who attended the Summit to continue to provide them with resources and information beneficial for immigrant students
*create a Findings report from data and notes gathered from the Summit, distribute to teachers, students, Board of Education, principals
*setting up another Board of Education and/or meeting with school principals in January 2012 to present the Findings report
*identifying allies for the next Immigrant Youth Summit 2012
*make policy recommendations based off student experiences and survey results, as well as committee members experiences while interacting with students at the summit
*create actionable steps with every priority

C. Preparation for B. of Education presentation

Florence Corteza, intern from Hydra Mendoza’s office shared with committee members that they can present at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 sometime between 6:30-7:00 p.m. Ms. Corteza advised that there should just be one member representing the committee and recommended that it be committee Chair Yang. Ms. Corteza invited other committee members to attend the meeting to support. The presentation will be 5-7 minutes long and take place at 555 Franklin, 1st floor at the Conference Room.

Committee members worked together to provide an outline for Commissioner Yang to present at the Board of Education meeting. The outline covered the background and purpose of the Immigrant Youth Summit, which lead to the creation of the Youth Immigration Committee, then moved on to cover the major themes learned from the summit, as well as what the committee members would like to work on now that the summit has taken place.
