1. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order at 4:32pm.
Commissioners present: Baer, Brodwin, Chan, LaCroix, Marshall-Fricker, Tu Mutch. Student Advisory Council member present: Zhang. All members were present.
Staff present: Yedidia.

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

Commissioner Tu Mutch, seconded by commissioner Brodwin, moved to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved unanimously by acclamation.

3. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

 

There was none.

4. Election of Chair

The presenters for item 5A being present—and this item itself being redundant, given that the “Election of Chair” was also calendared as item 5B—this item was deferred.

5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)

A. Presentation on The San Francisco Safe Routes to School Program
Promoting active, fun and healthy ways to school while building school communities.
Seeking youth commission input on programs and opportunities
Presenter: Jesse Serafino-Agar, SF Bicycle Coalition

Jason Serafino-Agar (SF Bicycle Coalition Safe Routes to School Coordinator) and Matt Dove (YMCA Associate Director of Bicycle Programs) presented to the committee on the Safe Routes to School program (http://sfsaferoutestoschool.org/).

Commissioners Chan, Baer and SACer Zhang asked questions.

B. Election of Chair

Commissioner Baer was elected Chair and Commissioner Chan was elected Outreach Officer.

C. Mission Statement for FY 11-12

Through a collective writing process, the committee crafted a Mission Statement. The full text will be available shortly, after some syntactical clean up.

D. Crafting policy priorities for FY 11-12

Commissioners expressed interest in pursuing the following projects:

• helping to implement Chapter 12N of the Administrative Code requiring training of youth workers on LGBTQ youth cultural competency (Tu Mutch, Chan);
• improving SRO nonprofit housing conditions (Chan, Tu Mutch);
• furthering the production of more housing for homeless youth, especially LGBTQ youth (Chan; Tu Mutch);
• furthering the Youth Commission’s commitment to helping the City Family make MUNI free for youth, as established in Youth Commission resolution 1112—AL—01 “Free Youth Transportation,” adopted on September 21, 2011 (LaCroix, Baer, Tu Mutch;
• recreation and parks issues and field improvement issues (Marshall-Fricker, Baer, Zhang; though, to be sure, there were differences among committee members regarding the safety, utility and cost-effectiveness of turf fields); and
• creating a user-friendly database of youth programming and services in San Francisco (Brodwin).

6. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 6:04pm.
