1. Call to Order and Roll Call

Committee Vice Chair Shackelford called the meeting to order at 4:49 p.m. There was quorum. Commissioners present: Nicholas Persky, Mia Shackelford. Staff present: Phimy Truong, Kyron Covington (intern), Taylor Gambucci (intern).

A. Presentation from Sabrina Mutukisna and Ciara Wade, Co-Chairs of the Youth Employment Coalition,
“Overview, Landscape, and Priorities for the Youth Employment Coalition 2011-2012”

Ms. Mutukisna and Ms. Wade introduced themselves to committee members and gave a brief overview of their involvement in youth employment programs in San Francisco.

Ms. Mutukisna then provided a detailed overview on the history of the Youth Employment Coalition – a local coalition under the National Youth Employment Coalition; the different youth employment providers and youth workers involved in the coalition, and discussed advocacy work with committee members.

Ms. Wade then provided a more extensive presentation on their roles as Co-C hairs of the Youth Employment Coalition and shared policy priorities with committee members. Ms. Wade then explained the Opportunity Index and shared an interactive website that detailed the different factors that can affect individuals’ success and mobility.

Committee members asked the presenters clarifying questions and shared their own policy priorities.

B. Research, Study, Discuss, Work on 2011-2012 Policy Priorities

Committee members set aside time to work on policy priorities. Members discussed the possibility of presenting to the Student Advisory Council on their goal of surveying college and career resources provided to students at the public schools. Members drafted some survey questions:

* Does your school have a central location where you can receive college/career info?
If so where?_________ Who?___________
*Have your counselors spoken to you about college/career?
* Mandatory Class: College + Career, to take one semester?
* How effective is this course? What could be improved?
* Do you have a college counselor? If yes how much access to you have?
* Do you get more youth employment program info at your school or outside?

There was no official action taken.

 

6. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 7:09 p.m.
