3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

A. October 12, 2011

Commissioner Tu Mutch, seconded by Commissioner Brodwin, moved to approve the minutes to the Executive Committee meeting of October 12, 2011. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

There was none.

5. Staff Report/Update on Communications, etc.

The Committee discussed the upcoming 2011 Neighborhood Empowerment Network awards and paged through the youth award nominees. After discussion, the consensus was to present the award to Brandon Jackson.

The Committee discussed the upcoming San Francisco Education Fund Youth Are Resources Conference, where the Youth Commission has been invited to provide a 60 minute presentation to a break out group of 35-40 public high school students. Commissioner Bonner committed to working with staff to develop the workshop.

Commissioner Brodwin alerted her colleagues of the fact that she and her two fellow Youth Commissioners who are Lick-Wilmerding High School Students are in the early stages of planning a conference to be held on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day national holiday. Last year, three Lick-Wilmerding High School Youth Commissioners (all of whom have since graduated and moved out of San Francisco) planned a conference centered on young people and their legal and civil rights. Following the success of last year’s conference—which drew some 200 students for an invigorating day of education and Youth Commission profile-raising—Commissioner Brodwin and her colleagues want to do the same this January 2012.

Commissioner Bonner alerted her colleagues to the fact that the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families’ Youth Empowerment Fund recently released mini grant applications.

6. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)

A. Updates on Executive Officer Duties
a. Legislative Affairs Officer
Commissioner Bonner provided her colleagues with a copy of the memo to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors she had crafted and sent in response to the legislation referred (the $1.9 million child care supplemental) that the Youth Commission supported at the most recent Youth Commission meeting of October 17, 2011.
b. Community Outreach Officer
Commissioner Brodwin explained that over the course of the past two weeks she’s contacted most of her colleagues on the Commission and set up (or already had) discussions with them regarding their respective individual community outreach yearly plans (all of this pursuant to the Community Outreach Plan adopted by the Youth Commission on October 17.)
c. Media and Community Relations Officer
Commissioner Tu Mutch shared with her colleagues the draft Media and Public Relations Plan she had prepared and was recommending for adoption at the next full Youth Commission meeting. There were comments, questions and general love and joy for this robust plan!
d. All Executive Officers: Check-Ins with other Commissioners
Executive Officers had no items to bring forward from their colleagues.

B. Establishing the agenda for the November 7, 2011, regular full Youth Commission meeting.
The Committee agreed to focus on housing at its next meeting—this at the urging of Commissioner Bonner—and thus calendared a joint presentation from the San Francisco Housing Authority and the Mayor’s Office of Housing. The Committee also agreed to the request of presentations and requests for support from the Transitional Age Youth Initiative of San Francisco and the Out of Site Youth Arts Center. Finally, Committee members calendared the recommended adoption of the aforementioned Media and Public Relations Plan.
