Orientation Retreat (2 Days)

Day 1

10:00-10:30  Arrival of Commissioners
Continental breakfast.

10:30-11:30  Welcome to the Youth Commission!
Discussion of the importance of the role of a Youth Commissioner.


11:30-12:30 Former Youth Commission Panel
Former Youth Commissioners discuss their experiences in the role and share lessons while answering questions from current Commissioners.

12:30-1:30 Lunch
Etc.

1:30-2:00 How Change is Made—The Commission’s Tools
Staff explains the tools that Youth Commissioners have to create the change they want to see. Topics covered will be resolutions, hearings, gatherings, YouthVote survey.

2:00-3:00 Being a Representative
Staff leads a discussion about what it means to be a representative in City government, focusing on the need for Commissioners to remain youth and organizers who have access to government as peers rather than a special group of pseudo-adult politicians.

3:00-4:00 Team Building Exercise

4:00-4:30  Picking Committees and Goodbye!
Staff lists the Committees and their duties. Commissioners vote on the top two Committees that they want to serve on.

Day 2

11:00-1:00 The Work!
Commissioners get into Committees. The Commissioners are given the ongoing issues, policies, and resolutions that must be picked up in addition to data concerning potential issues. The Commissioners must then prioritize 1-3 issues in addition to the ongoing issues to focus on in the coming term.

1:00-2:00  Lunch

2:00-3:00 Mock Meeting
First, Staff presents on parliamentary procedure. Using a past Youth Commission agenda item, the Staff leads the Commission through a mock meeting.

3:00-4:00 Reflections
Commissioners and staff discuss what they’ve taken from the retreat and what the look forward to in the coming term.

4:00-6:00pm Recess
No official Commission Business planned.

6:00-7:30 The Swearing In!
Commissioners are sworn in by either the Mayor or a member of the Board of Supervisors.

ACCESSIBLE MEETING POLICY

The first day of the 2009-2010 Youth Commission Orientation Retreat will be held in Fort Mason’s Room C210, Fort Mason Center, at the Intersection of Marina Blvd & Buchanan Street (No Street Address), San Francisco, CA 94123. The room is ADA accessible. There is low cost parking at Fort Mason Center and free parking nearby. The first hour of parking is always free. Weekday rates are $1.00/hour with a $7.00 maximum. Weekend rates are slightly higher with an $8.00 maximum. A cashier is on duty from 8 a.m. to midnight and the exit gates accept credit/debit cards. Zipcars are available on site. The second day of the 2009-2010 Youth Commission Orientation Retreat will be held in City Hall, Room 034 (Basement), 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA, 94102. The closest accessible BART station is the Civic Center Station at the United Nations Plaza and Market Street. Accessible MUNI lines serving this location are: MUNI Metro Lines J-Church, K-Ingleside, L-Taraval, M-Oceanview, and N-Judah at Van Ness and Civic Center Stations; 42-Downtown Loop; 9-San Bruno; 19-Polk; and 71-Haight Noriega. The Commission meeting room is wheelchair accessible. Accessible curbside parking spaces have been designated on the corners of McAllister and Polk, and Grove and Polk. There is accessible parking available within the Civic Center Underground Parking Garage at the corner of McAllister and Polk Streets, and within the Performing Arts Parking Garage at Grove and Franklin Streets.

If you require the use of an American sign language interpreter, a sound enhancement system, or a reader during the meeting, Calendars and minutes of the meeting in alternative formats; such arrangements can be made by calling Diana Pang at (415) 554-6446, at least 72 hours prior to the meeting. Late requests will be honored if possible.

Individuals with severe allergies, environmental illness, multiple chemical sensitivity or related disabilities should call our accessibility hotline at (415) 554-8925 to discuss meeting accessibility. In order to assist the City’s efforts to accommodate such people, attendees at public meetings are reminded that other attendees may be sensitive to various chemical based products.
