Minutes

DATE:          Monday, October 16, 2000

1. Call to Order and Roll Call: The meeting was called to order at 5:05 pm by Commissioner Howard-Johnson. Commissioner’s Present: Allison, Bonilla, Arreguìn-Ferñandez, Howard-Johnson, Lantz, Martin, Matranga, Meksavan, Smith, Valdez, Vedad, Villaluna. Absent: Commissioner Fosselman Staff Present: NTanya Lee, Ron McCan, Colleen Montoya

2. Motion to approve agenda: There was a motion to move item 6H before item 5. Motion approved.

3. Approval of the Minutes of October 2nd : Minutes Approved.

4. Staff Report: Colleen announced that the Youth Commission Office will be open during the following hours: Monday 9am to 6pm; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 7:30pm; Friday 9am to 6 pm.

NTanya handed out the Skills & Leadership Assessment Survey and ask that the Commissioners take five minutes to complete it

ITEM 6H: Discussion and possible action re: "Silent Survivor ShoutOut" Youth Commission Domestic Violence event to be held Wednesday, October 25, 2000. Christina Goette from the Violence Prevention Network announced that they will have flyers for the ShoutOut in the packets for people attending the "Peace it Together" Conference. They would also like a commissioner to come over at the end of the conference and announce the ShoutOut. Commissioner Asberry volunteered. Christina will contact Commissioner Asberry with more information.

Mari reported that they have been faxing flyers to various agencies, and is requesting that everyone be responsible for contacting their Supervisor and inviting them to the ShoutOut. They are still looking for people who are willing to give testimonials. She also reported that Raja Rahim will be speaking as well as a representative from WYLD during the experts portion of the ShoutOut. Tanene has found a youth who will be the focus of the news story. Max will be faxing the press release to various members of the media on Thursday.

5. Officer Report:.

Myron reported that he is trying to meet with the Superintendent and the Mayor to find out how the Youth Commission can be active in more media activities.

Mari attended a screening of "TEENS" which will air on the WB (dates to be announced). They are looking for local artist to use as background music. For more information, see Mari. There is also a TV Show called " HOT TALK FOR TEENS" on public access. Mari suggested the Commission should consider doing a presentation with them.

Tanene announced that the radio interview she and Anthony did aired a few times over the weekend.

6. Commission Business:

A. Discussion and possible action re: Presentation by JMPT Consulting on Youth Impact Program and DCYF evaluation and planning process. Esther Morales from JMPT presented on the Youth Impact program with DCYF. She explained the program and asked the Commission to come and do a training for the participants on the history of the Commission and what the Commission has endorsed. Commissioners Allison and Matranga are interested and will follow up for more information.

B. Discussion and possible action re: Presentation by Greg Zhovreboff, Student Delegate
to the San Francisco Board of Education, on the Student Advisory Council. Greg handed out a fact sheet about the Student Advisory Council and explained the history and purpose. He also asked for the Commission to appoint a liaison to the SAC and have them attend meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at the Board of Education Office. There was a unanimous vote for Commissioners Lantz and Howard-Johnson to act as liaisons. There was also a brief discussion about the 1120 San Francisco Public High School students who may not be graduating due to the new 240 credit rule.

C. Report re: Leadership & Strategic Planning Retreat held Saturday, October 7, 2000.
NTanya issued copies of the retreat agenda and outcomes to the Commission. Commissioners Valdez and Villaluna did a reportback to the Commission on each item on the agenda.

D. Discussion and possible action re: Selection of Youth Commission Committees.
NTanya went over the Committees that were chosen at the retreat and suggested that the Commissioners select the committee of which they wanted to be a core active member. She then explained what a core active member is. Ron then passed around the sign up sheet and the Commissioners selected their committees. He then announced that they would be contacted by their committee’s staff person regarding the time and date of the first meeting based on their availability forms.

E. Discussion and possible action re: Presentation by former Youth Commissioners
Jewnbug and Jasmin De La Rosa on the implementation of Proposition 21 in San
Francisco. This item was tabled because neither of the presenters were present.

F. Report re: Aptos Middle School Presentation held Wednesday, October 11, 2000.
Commissioners Smith and Lantz reported on their presentation at Aptos Middle School. They noted the youth had good questions and were very interested in the Commission.

G. Update re: San Francisco Board of Education Meeting held Tuesday, October 10, 2000.
Max gave a brief description of the meeting and stated that he will be attending the next Board of Education Meeting.

H. Discussion and possible action re: "Silent Survivor Shout Out" Youth Commission
Domestic Violence Event to be held Wednesday, October 25, 2000 [This item was moved before item 5 on the agenda. See above. ]

I. Presentation re: Youth Commission Radio Interview. This item was tabled due to time and will be placed on the next meeting’s agenda.

7. Public Comment: [This item was moved to Item 5 of the agenda]

8. Announcements:

· Colleen announced that they would like to have Youth Commissioners present to read a proclamation from the Mayor at Make a Difference Day on 10/28 at Dolores Park. She noted that the presentation will be at 8:00 in the morning. Commissioners Howard-Johnson, Smith, Bonilla, Vedad, Arreguìn-Ferñandez and Allison said they will attend.
