PLACE: Centerprise, San Francisco Presidio

1. Commissioners Present: Commissioner Allison, Berger, Brown, Cottrell, Fichelson, Gin, Koeppel, Lantz, Mattimore, Mourning, Olawale, Powell, Ramos, Virgen, Villaluna Absent: Commissioners Chan and Chang Staff Present: Nicole Derse, Colleen Montoya, Ron S. McCan, Karen Bugante (Intern)

2. New Business

A. Discussion re: Review the Goals and Objectives of the Day. Staff welcomed the new
Commissioners to the Youth Commission, reviewed the agenda for the day, and went over some logistics for the retreat.

B. Discussion re: Icebreakers (Youth Commissioners getting to know each other). The Commissioners participated in a series of activities to get to know each other. These activities included Human Bingo, the name game and the 5 M’s (favorite Month, Music, Movie, Meal and Motivation). The group then came up with group agreements for the term.

C. Discussion re: Youth Commission 101 - The History of the Youth Commission. The staff reviewed the history of the youth commission by going over the timeline, explaining the basic structure of the Commission (staff role, committees, etc.), and reviewing the Mission.

D. Discussion re: Active Listening/Communication Workshop. Ruth Barajas from YouthLine facilitated a workshop reviewing the basic skills of active listening and communication.

E. Discussion re: Team Building Activities. The Commission went bowling at Presidio Bowl.

F. Discussion re: Reflection on the Day. Everyone went around and said one thing that inspired them about the Commission, and one thing that they learned from another person in the group today.


3. Adjournment: The retreat was adjourned at 5:00 pm.

1. Commissioners Present: Commissioner Allison, Berger, Brown, Chan, Cottrell, Fichelson, Gin, Koeppel, Lantz, Mattimore, Mourning, Olawale, Powell, Ramos, Virgen, Villaluna Absent: Commissioner Chang Staff Present: Nicole Derse, Colleen Montoya, Ron S. McCan, Karen Bugante (Intern)

2. New Business

A. Discussion re: Review the Goals and Objectives of the Day. Ron welcomed everyone to the day and reviewed the agenda. Karen led the Commission in an Icebreaker - "Guess the person on your back"

B. Discussion re: Presentation by CORO on Inquiry/Information Gathering. Laney Whitcanack from CORO led a workshop about information gathering, which included a mock interview with a mystery guest.

C. Discussion re: Youth VOTE Workshop. Karen and Commissioners Ramos and Villaluna facilitated a workshop on YouthVote, which included a " YouthVote Jeopardy" Game Show.

D. Discussion re: Presentation on Diversity by Diversity Works. Viviana and Michael form Diversity Works facilitated a series of activities and discussions on Diversity with the Commission.

E. Discussion re: Team Building Activity. Karen led the Commission in a teambuilding activity, which involved building towers of index cards& blindfolded.

F. Discussion re: Presentation by former Youth Commissioners on the Youth Commission. Julia Globus-Sabori and Francisco Castillo spoke to the Commission about their experience on the Commission.

G. Discussion re: Reflection on the Day. Commissioners wrote letters to themselves about what their goals and expectations for the term were. They also went around and told the group one thing they learned today, and one question they want to ask the youth of San Francisco. Nicole also reminded everyone that we will be meeting at City Hall on Friday 8/16.


3. Adjournment: The retreat was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.

1. Commissioners Present: Commissioner Allison, Berger, Brown, Chan, Cottrell, Fichelson, Gin, Lantz, Mattimore, Mourning, Olawale, Powell, Ramos, Virgen, Villaluna Absent: Commissioners Chang and Koeppel, Staff Present: Nicole Derse, Colleen Montoya, Ron S. McCan, Karen Bugante (Intern)

2. New Business

A. Discussion re: Review the Goals and Objectives of the Day. Ron reviewed the agenda for the day, and Colleen lead an exercise where everyone checked in using descriptions from weather reports.

B. Discussion re: Presentation by Gloria L. Young, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors. Gloria welcomed the Commissioners, and gave a brief introduction of herself and role with the Board of Supervisors. She also gave a brief overview of the Department of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors.

C. Discussion re: Tour of City Hall. Commissioner Allison led the group on a tour of City Hall.

D. Discussion re: Youth Commission Relationship with City Hall. Nicole went over the Commissions role as an advisor in City Hall. Colleen spoke briefly about meeting with appointing officers.

E. Discussion re: Youth Commission Meetings with Appointing Officers. Commissioners met with representatives from their Supervisors offices. The Mayor’s appointees visited the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood services.

F. Discussion re: Review Youth Commission Bylaws and Responsibilities. Colleen reviewed the bylaws, attendance policy and expectations.

G. Discussion re: Robert’s Rules of Order. Commissioner Lantz briefly went over the basics of Roberts Rules of Order.

H. Discussion re: Youth Commission in the Media. Ron & Nicole reviewed some video clips from the Youth Commission in the news.

I. Discussion re: Facilitation Workshop. Nicole led the Commission in a facilitation workshop, which included a mock meeting.

J. Discussion re: Nuts & Bolts Policy Training Workshop. Ron went over the basics of writing resolutions and responding to referrals from the Board of Supervisors.

K. Discussion re: Reflection on the Day. Everyone went around and said one thing that excited them today, and answered the question "If I could create one piece of legislation for San Francisco’s Youth, it would be& "

Ron also reminded everyone that the retreat would be held at Centerprise in the Presidio on Saturday 8/16.

3. Adjournment: The retreat was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.

2. New Business

A. Discussion re: Review the Goals and Objectives of the Day. Ron went over the agenda for the day. Colleen lead an icebreaker - "Human Knot"

B. Discussion re: Envisioning Workshop. Commissioners filled out a personal goal sheet. Afterwards, there was a discussion about our issues, what motivates to work on those issues.

C. Discussion re: Brainstorm of the Year Ahead. This activity was cancelled due to time.

D. Discussion re: Committee Meetings. The Committees brainstormed initial committee goals, talked about YouthVote and looked over ballot propositions. They also set up a meeting for the next two weeks.

E. Discussion re: Stress/Time Management Workshop. Ron led a stress management/ time management workshop. He also passed out personal calendars for everyone.

F. Discussion re: Team Building Activity. This activity was cancelled due to time.

G. Discussion re: Advocacy/Coalition Building Workshop. Nicole and Commissioner Villaluna lead facilitated the Youth Movements in history workshop. They also discussed the importance of outreach/coalition building and knowing your community/district.

H. Discussion re: Evaluation of the Retreat. Commissioners filled out evaluation forms about the retreat.

I. Discussion re: Reflection on the Retreat. The Commission participated in group appreciations and shared one thing that they are excited to take with them.

3. Adjournment: The retreat was adjourned 5:15 p.m.
