Minutes

1. Call to Order and Roll Call: Commissioner Howard-Johnson called The meeting to order at 5:20pm. Commissioner’s Present: Allison, Arreguìn-Ferñandez, Bell, Geodzhayev, Howard-Johnson, Lantz, Lockett, Martin, Meksavan, Villaluna Absent: Commissioners Bonilla, Fosselman, Matranga, Smith, Valdez and Vedad Staff Present: Nicole Derse, Ron S. McCan, Colleen Montoya

2. Motion to approve agenda: There was a motion to remove item 9H from the agenda (Ms. Imani was unable to attend due to illness). Motion Approved. Agenda approved.

3. Approval of the Minutes May 21st : Minutes Approved.

4. Staff Report:

Nicole reported on the Mayor’s Budget Transmittal Hearing. She also informed everyone about the Budget Strategizing meeting at Coleman Advocates on June 5th .

Ron issued the permission slips for the San Francisco/ Oakland Youth Commission end of the year trip to Great America on Wednesday, June 20th.

5. Officer Report :

Commissioner Howard-Johnson, Chair - Commissioner Howard-Johnson met with Supervisor Ammiano about supporting YouthLine, who agreed to support the add-back. He also reported on the Mayor’s Budget Transmittal Hearing.

Commissioner Villaluna, Operations Officer - Commissioner Villaluna reported on her presentation at Walden House for Girls. She also gave passed around a sign up sheet for the 5th Anniversary party, and asked Commissioners to sign up to work on various committees at the party. She asked everyone to arrive at the Mission Cultural Center by 4:00pm.

Commissioner Valdez, Government Affairs Officer - Commissioner Valdez was absent from this meeting.

Commissioner Allison, Community Affairs Officer - Commissioner Allison reported that Supervisor Gonzalez may support the resolution supporting the passage of AB1261 that she authored and was voted on at the last meeting.

Commissioner Fosselman, Media & Public Relations Officer - Commissioner Fosselman was absent from this meeting.

6. Committee Report:

Education Committee - Commissioner Lantz announced that The Education Committee’s report is complete, and they will be holding a press conference. Date to be announced later.

Culture & Urban Environment - The Culture & Urban Environment Committee will be holding their next meeting on Thursday, June 7, 2001.

Public Health Committee - The Public Health Committee had no report.

Housing Committee - Commissioner Vedad reported that the Housing Committee is in the process of completing their report.

Juvenile Justice Committee - Commissioner Villaluna reported that they will be meeting with Supervisor Gonzalez and Rob Eshelman about Juvenile Justice

Executive Committee - Commissioner Howard-Johnson reported that the Executive Committee will began gathering information for the 2000-2001 Annual Report.

7. Old Business:

A. Discussion and possible action re: Resolution urging the Board of Supervisors the support the important work of San Francisco’s YouthLine, Through a 2001/2002 budget add-back of $50,000. Commissioner Howard-Johnson presented this resolution. The Resolution was passed.

B. Discussion and possible action re: Youth Commission’s 5th Anniversary Celebration on June 8, 2001. Commissioner Villaluna restated the information she gave in her officer report.

C. Discussion and possible action re: Authorization of Absences on May 21, 2001 for Commissioners Bell, Bonilla, Fosselman & Lantz. Commissioners Bonilla and Fosselman were absent from this meeting. Absences for both Commissioners Bell and Lantz were approved.




8. Public Comment:

Jesse Brosac Came and spoke to the Commission about advocating for more skate parks. He stated that Crocker Amazon skate park is not a good park, and there should be more parks like the on located in Alameda at the Naval Base. Commissioner Villaluna gave Jesse her card and told her to contact her so that she can put him in touch with Supervisor Leno’s office, who is working on the issue.

9. New Business:


A. Report re: Mayor’s Budget Transmittal Hearing held Thursday, May 31, 2001. Commissioner Howard-Johnson followed up with more information from the hearing.

B. Discussion and possible action re: Lisa Polacci, Outreach Associate, La Casa De Las Madres, on the Teen Dating Violence Program. Lisa talked about La Casa De Las Madres new Teen Dating Violence Program, and asked the Commission to help brainstorm ways to get the word out to the youth community. The Commissioner’s suggested holding open round table discussions and offering compensation to find out what youth wanted from the program, as well as holding dances as a way of outreaching and offering a safe space. Commissioner Villaluna asked Lisa to keep the Commission informed about the projects the program will be working on.

C. Discussion and possible action re: Presentation by the Student Advisory Council (SAC) on the Board of Education’s Budget allocation for staff support to the SAC. Greg Z. from the SAC came to inform the Commission on the current effort to get money from the Board of Education’s budget to get staff for the SAC. He talked about passed efforts and staffing and why it would be good to re-visit the issue.

D. Discussion and possible action re: Resolution urging the Superintendent of Public Schools to work to provide more funding for visual and musical arts instructors through the upcoming 2001-02 district budget cycle. Commissioner Arreguìn-Ferñandez presented this resolution. Resolution passed.

E. Discussion and possible action re: Resolution supporting the funding of High School Wellness Centers in San Francisco. Commissioner Arreguìn-Ferñandez presented this resolution. Resolution passed.

F. Discussion and possible action re: Resolution Commending Operation Parks for its work to ensure the maintenance and security of San Francisco’s parks and open space. Commissioner Arreguìn-Ferñandez presented this resolution. Resolution passed.

G. Discussion and possible action re: Resolution commending St. Philip the Apostle Elementary School traffic Squad on their work in helping protect our youth population and curb pedestrian fatalities in the city & County of San Francisco. Commissioner Arreguìn-Ferñandez presented this resolution. Resolution passed.


10. Announcements: There were no announcements
