There will be public comment on each item.

1. Call to Order and Roll Call

Chair Ontiveros called the meeting to order at 4:34 p.m.
Committee members present: Youth Commissioner Rene Ontiveros, Youth Commissioner Angel Carrion, Youth Commissioner tardy: Javonte Holloway, Student Advisory Council member present: Hannah Li. Staff present: Kyron Covington (intern), Maria Garcia (intern), Phimy Truong.

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

 

Commissioner Carrion, seconded by Ontiveros moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

 

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

 

A. October 19, 2011

Commissioner Carrion, seconded by Ontiveros moved to approve the minutes to the committee meeting of October 19, 2011. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

 

4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

There were none.

5. Business (All Items Below Discussion and Possible Action)

 

A. Presentation from Malachi Garza of the W. Haywood Burns Institute (http://www.burnsinstitute.org)

The presentation from Malachi Garza of the W. Haywood Burns Institute was cancelled the day of the meeting.

In place of this presentation, Jay Ly, Project Coordinator from the Bayview branch office of the Community Youth Center of San Francisco brought the Bayview Youth Advocates to share with committee members their neighborhood campaign to promote positive change and reduce violence.

Committee members were thoroughly impressed by the youth advocates’ presentation and offered to team up with the youth to work on their campaign.

B. Update/Action on Committee priorities and work, including: case management; DCYF Violence Prevention RFP; programming/tour of Log Cabin Ranch and Juvenile Hall

The Youth Justice Issues committee finalized policy priorities for 2011-2012:

*collaboration with the Community Youth Center’s Bayview Youth Advocate to work on a project to bring positive change into the community
*Log Cabin tour
*work on curriculum in juvenile hall
*youth leadership positions in Juvenile Hall
*work on observing training for DGO police code
*finding out how youth in juvenile hall can access the Yard-a recreational space at Juvenile Hall that has limited access to youth due to staffing
*case management

6. Adjournment

 

The meeting was adjourned at 6:03 p.m.
