1. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order at 4:40pm. Committee members present: Commissioner Ontiveros, Commissioner Holloway, Student Advisory Council member Li, Student Advisory Council member Portillo, Student Advisory Council member Daily, Transitional Age Youth Initiative Young Adult Advocate Shereff. Staff present: Yedidia, Garcia (intern).

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

Commissioner Ontiveros, seconded by Commissioner Holloway, moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

A. November 16, 2011

Commissioner Ontiveros, seconded by Commissioner Holloway, moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of November 16, 2011. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

There was none.

5. Business (All Items Below Discussion and Possible Action)

A. Update/Action on Committee priorities, including:
• collaboration with the Community Youth Center’s Bayview Youth Advocate to work on a project to bring positive change into the community

Committee members spent over an hour with five to six youth participants of the Community Youth Center’s Bayview Youth Advocates, drafting a resolution to support of the program’s pledge campaign to reduce violence.

• Log Cabin tour

Committee members concluded they were excited for their trip tomorrow to Log Cabin Ranch.

• work on curriculum in juvenile hall
• youth leadership positions in Juvenile Hall
• work on observing training for DGO police code
• finding out how youth in juvenile hall can access the Yard-a recreational space at Juvenile Hall that has limited access to youth due to staffing

Committee members agreed that Commissioner Ontiveros and Commissioner Carrion—who had a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, December 8, with the Deputy Director of the Juvenile Probation Department, Allison Magee, regarding getting youth access to the yard—should straightforwardly ask why the yard is not in use, how the yard could be used, and what the Youth Commission can do to ensure young people in Juvenile Hall have access to the yard as soon as possible; in short, committee members agreed that Commissioners Ontiveros and Holloway should be direct in their questions, and then report back to the Committee.

Any materials distributed to the members of the Youth Commission within 72 hours of the meeting or after the agenda packet has been delivered to the members are available for inspection—along with minutes of previous Youth Commission meetings and all supplementary information—at the Youth Commission office during regular office hours (9am to 6pm, Monday—Friday).
