Historic Preservation Commission
The Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for identifying and designating San Francisco landmarks and buildings in the City's historic districts. It consists of seven Commissioners and a Commission Secretary.
More specifically, the Historic Preservation Commission reviews and approves applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for alterations, site improvements and new construction affecting San Francisco's designated landmarks, buildings and sites within historic districts. The Commission also makes recommendations to the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and other City agencies concerning amendments to Articles 10 and 11 of the Planning Code.
Hearing Schedule
The Historic Preservation Commission holds a public hearing (also known as a "Commission Meeting") twice monthly to carry out its duties.
- When: every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 12:30 to 4:30 PM *

What to expect at a Historic Preservation Hearing
At either a Regular Hearing (also known as a "Meeting") or a Special Hearing, only matters posted on the agenda can be heard. The procedure for public hearings is as follows:
- A thorough description of the item by the Director or a member of the staff.
- A presentation of the proposal, by the project sponsor(s)'s team.
- Public testimony regarding the proposal.
- After all of the testimony is submitted, the Commission will consider the evidence, deliberate, and either make a decision, take the matter under advisement, or continue the matter in order for additional information to be presented.

Accessible Meeting Information
Commission hearings are held in Room 400 at City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place in San Francisco. City Hall is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is accessible to persons using wheelchairs and other assistive mobility devices. Ramps are available at the Grove, Van Ness and McAllister entrances. A wheelchair lift is available at the Polk Street entrance.
