Updates/Progress Report on Tasks Delegated to Sub-Committee Members

 

 

  • Commissioner L.C. Jones has contacted True Hope Church and Providence Baptist Church and has spoken directly to both of the ministers about making announcements and posting fliers. Commissioner Sansome has also agreed to do the same as well as put up a banner. Commissioner Brown will be following through with Pastor Calvin Jones to have him make the announcement and put out fliers. Commissioner Jones is still planning to speak with Rev. Byrd and Father Dan about posting the banners and putting out fliers. She also met with Dr. Katz, Dept. of Public Health, and they confirmed that they will have a presence at the fair and possibly conduct BMI checks. They also talked about contacting Michelle Obama to discuss making a video on obesity and diabetes to show at the fair. Commissioner Jones also met with Chancellor Griffin who was very excited to get the Culinary Dept. involved in the process. Dr. Griffin mentioned that he will be contacting Anita Grier and Dr. Hunnicutt to get them involved. Commissioner Jones will follow up.

 

  • Herb Dang was not attendance but he did send a representative, George Engel. There was no report provided.

 

  • Tony Caruso has been given permission to purchase a Wii Nintendo Gaming System to raffle off as a grand prize. Has a plan to provide small redwood planter boxes and he will provide the wood and trellis and Herb dang will have the shops build them.

 

  • Megan Blanton is planning to have some of the kids attend the health fair and explain what they have learned. She also plans to set-up a booth and show pictures and have activities based on what the children have learned.

 

  • Dr. Toye Moses contacted the Bayview newspaper/Sun Reporter and they have agreed to publish an ad regarding the health fair. A press release will be sent to both the Bayview newspaper and Sun Reporter. Dr. Moses has spoken to Kaiser but the person he has been in contact with is no longer there. It is still unclear if USCF will participate but Dr. Moses will follow-up with them.

 

  • Sam Murray did not provide a copy of the flier but he reported that he is working on it and will get it to Commissioner Jones by the end of the day.

 

  • Ms. Alderete was not in attendance, however she did send in a report stating that her school s nurse recently attended a Kaiser conference related to childhood obesity and she will provide report at the next meeting. They have spoken to few coffee shops and bagel shops and are still trying to obtain gift cards. Ms. Alderete will be at the next meeting.

 

  • Kathryn Summers will be following up with Shipwreck to make sure that the announcements and fliers go out and that the banners go up.

 

  • Dr. Churchwell and Dr. Parker will have a booth and educate health fair attendees on proper dental hygiene.

 

Ideas for Physical Activities

  • Tamara Jones, SFPUC, was not in attendance, however, she did report that she is working on her assignment which is arranging the Tai Chi and Yoga demonstrations.

 

 

The School s Involvement with the Students Concerning the Art Projects for the Health Fair

 

  • Students from all schools will create posters that will decorate the hall and be hung in the auditorium. Students grades 4th and above will write essays that will be displayed next to their artwork. Ms. Alderete will be responsible for coordinating volunteers to help pick up art work from various schools and display them in the halls and auditorium.

 

 

Ideas to Get Students and Community to Attend the Health Fair

 

 

  • Incentives for students who attend, i.e., free dress passes, homework pass, etc.
  • Great prizes for raffle drawings, including a grand prize such as a bike or a Wi-Fi gaming system.
  • Performances by the students to get the parents to come out
  • Advertise in advance with fliers, banners, posters, etc.
  • Outreach through the churches in the community. Commissioner L.C. Jones will contact Pastor Byrd and Father Don about getting the word out.
  • Herb Dang will speak and provide fliers to the Bayview Merchants Rotary Club

 

 

Budget

 

 

  • Sam Murray reported that the SFPUC will be donating $1,000. Tony Flores is the contact person.

 

  • Heidi Harden, Think Round, will continue to be the fiscal agent and is willing to help in the same capacity as last year.
