Updates/Progress Report on Tasks Delegated to Sub-Committee Members
|
· Commissioner L.C. Jones suggested that committee members be present to help with the health fair set-up and decorating on Friday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. She has a concern having to do with the art teacher at the school engaging the students with art display. This was supposed to be a part of their curriculum for the entire year thus there shouldn’t be a problem on having students to put art work for the event. The other main concern is to pay the teacher just for spending a week’s time with the students to make art work. It would be just a show; it would not be the children had learning throughout this year. She asked for Ms. Hardin’s comment about the issue. She also showed the members the draft program for the event, she wants the opinion or suggestions of the members (typographical error, changes, etc) so she could in put it on the final draft.
· Herb Dang was not in attendance but Sam Murray talked in his behalf regarding contact with SFPD. Due to all the going on, Capt. Suhr was difficult to get hold of, but he will be in the Commissioners Meeting at 6:00 p.m. and will just address the issues in meeting.
· Sam Murray distributed and delivered all the flyers and all the banners are posted in schools.
· Heidi Hardin received a donation of $1,000.00 from the PUC which was deposited Monday for the commission. In response with the concern of Comm. Jones, she totally agreed and apologized about the situation. She explained that she had been out and since she came back, she wasn’t able to reach anybody and in the past week she called everyday and found out only one school has been doing the art work. She’s been thinking to hire an artist to go in and work with the kids who she did last year to volunteer herself and do art work with the kids. She went into 4 schools and hired artists to help but didn’t do it on the last week of the event. In conclusion, she will withdraw her artist and say there’s no reason to go in and do something. She also contacted Malcolm X and wanted to ask if they are doing the art for the event. Comm. Jones complies and the school has been doing the art project for the event.
· Yete McMahon from DPH was not in attendance but called Comm. Jones. Unfortunately they weren’t able to get enough people to man the blood mobile so it will not be available for the event. But, she will cover various topics such as BMI Screening/Testing, Nutrition & Physical Health Activities, Soda Free Summer encouraging youth not to drink soda all summer & Child Passenger Safety. She can also add Asthma and Substance Abuse information. She will need 2-3 tables set-up for the event.
· Emily – Wade Thompson was not in attendance. Comm. Jones talked in her behalf. She did make a contact for the breath mobile. Dr. Burns and the driver of the mobile were here today to check out where the area of the mobile would be. Also, met with the engineer to determine if the outlets are available. Set ups has been settled and the time for the set up will be 9:30 a.m.
· Tony Caruso will meet Katherine Sneed on Monday, May 17. He showed all the items for the raffle it were 6 Razor Kick Scooters, 5 Basketballs, 5 Footballs, and 24 Jump Ropes. He suggested purchasing 6 helmets to be given with the scooters to promote safety. He will also provide over 150 tomato plants from the master gardeners of College of San Mateo for give away. In regards to his demonstration, he will go into something simpler to show the people that they can have a garden with nothing but a plastics pot. He have 15 gallons of recycled pots next door and he will just buy tomato cage, bag of soil, 15 gallon pot there will be 10-15 of it available to be given away. Print out some instruction guides talking about different tomatoes varieties so the public would have information to take home with the plant give away.
· Tamra will be taking charge with the raffle tickets. She also made contact with two perso who will demonstrate Yoga and Taichi sessions. They committed to participate and will follow-up.
· Dr. Hunnicut was not in attendance. Comm. Jones speaking in her behalf. She heard not directly from her but from Dr. Moses that the Culinary Dept. would not be able to take part on the event. Maybe they will participate next year.
· Dr. Parker & Dr. Churchwell planned slide presentation showing different manifestations. He had received the first layout from the artist, going through with it and needs proofing and adjustments. It will be complete by the next 2-3days. He also planned to have tooth brushing models to show the proper procedures how to brush teeth. There will be also dentists on the event that will provide information. In addition, Colgate donated toothbrush kits to be given away.
· Megan Blanton was not in attendance, but she’s been working with the children at the school on Healthy Habits. She’s preceding on with everything that she said she’s going to do.
· Julie Alderete was not in attendance but sent her report on having the student to create art that can be displayed at the fair. She had confirmed with Noah’s bagels to get donation of 80 bagels and with Starbucks to donate 5 gallons of coffee and she will picked and bring them at the event on 05/22. She also sent flyers home to all students and families in her school. She needs to fine two more volunteers from her school site to help on the event, besides the nurse and herself. Lastly, she will be there to help set up and stay for the majority of the event.
· Dr. Toye Moses sent press releases to first, Sun Reporter and they will publish it on Saturday’s newspaper (05/15), second, Bayview Newspaper, they do the publication once a month and promise it will be online, SF Post and will be publish this weekend, third, SFPUC Payroll newsletter and will be attach on every employees paycheck, lastly, press release is ready to be sent to Currents. UCSF Medical School, we received an email from one of the students, 4 medical students will be attending the event but they’re waiting instructions from us, but they will not be able to do what they did in the last event.
· Dr. Ghaley not sure with the plan. Christina from the prevention department will be participating and for Dr. Ghaley we’re committed to send volunteers for the BMI screening but in terms of the panel and presentations I haven’t heard anything. They will give lectures to persons who will visit there booths information about what’s BMI all about, the difference between height and weight, etc.
