POPOS and Public Art Map Now Available

City map for Privately Owned Public Open Spaces and Public Works of Art now available

The Planning Department proudly announces the release of an interactive map listing all of the city's Privately Owned Public Open Spaces (POPOS) and public works of art.

The Planning Department through the Downtown Plan foresees a downtown known the world over as a center of ideas, services and trade and as a place for stimulating experiences. In essence, downtown San Francisco should encompass a compact mix of activities, historical values, and distinctive architecture and urban forms that engender a special excitement reflective of a world city. Part of the excitement includes the opportunity to create spaces for the public (POPOS) and works of art to enrich those spaces. Excellent public spaces are of vital importance to the desirability of downtown San Francisco as a place to visit, work, or live.

More than 25 years since the adoption of the Downtown Plan, has seen the growth of an extensive outdoor gallery weaving individual open spaces and public works of art into a network that enriches the environment for workers and tourists alike. POPOS are publicly accessible spaces in forms of plazas, terraces, atriums, small parks, and even snippets that are provided and maintained by private developers. To reestablish this tradition of enhancing the environment for all to enjoy, artwork too is incorporated in new buildings and public spaces in downtown.
