Resolution Recognizing Tiana Day as a Youth Activist

for Black Lives Matter

 

BE IT KNOWN That the Commission on the Status of Women of the City & County of San Francisco hereby issues and authorizes the execution, by the subscribing Commissioners, of the following commendation:

WHEREAS, youth activists have organized powerful Black Lives Matter demonstrations in San Francisco and across the nation to honor the life of George Floyd, a Black man who was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and to demand justice for police violence and affirm the humanity, contributions, and resilience of Black people, and,

WHEREAS, #BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer; its mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes; it now encompasses at least 40 chapters in a member-led global network that centers the leadership of women and queer and trans people; and

WHEREAS, Tiana Day organized a youth-led Black Lives Matter demonstration on June 6th, drawing thousands of people from across the Bay Area to the Golden Gate Bridge and peacefully bringing traffic to a complete stop in both directions; it was one of the largest protests in San Francisco for George Floyd to date;

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women expresses its deepest appreciation to Tiana Day for her advocacy as a youth activist for Black Lives Matter and against police violence.
