May was a great month for Financial Justice in San Francisco!
In late 2016, people from all parts of San Francisco came together to start the Financial Justice Project, to assess and reform how fines and fees impact low-income San Franciscans and people of color. We are starting to see the fruits of our collective efforts!
- We released our preliminary recommendations for reform. Click here to see the report and executive summary. These reforms came out of The Fines and Fees Task Force, which brought together City/County departments, institutions and community groups.
- The community came out to support the reforms, including many people who helped develop the recommendations. We had dozens of people and partners show up for a rally and press conference, and to testify before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
- We’ve been getting a lot of great media coverage to spread the word about this work. Check out the “What’s New” section of our webpage for a few examples.
We’d love to hear from you! Let us know if you have any ideas, suggestions, or questions for us!
Yours in financial justice,
