Often referred to as “the heart of the city,” the Mission District covers the area east of Twin Peaks to the James Lick Freeway, and south of Market Street to Cesar Chavez Street. Because of its geographical configuration that insulates it from the city’s fog and wind that affects so many other areas of town, the district’s sunny climate makes it a pleasant place in which to live. In recent years, the Mission has become a destination spot for specialty restaurants and shops, as well as having a burgeoning club scene.

Originally built in 1902 at 17th and Treat Streets, the station relocated to 1240 Valencia Street in 1950. A new Mission Station, with triple the square footage of the old station, a community room and special secure holding areas, opened in 1994.

Mission Station Captain Gaetano Caltagirone was the first generation of his Sicilian family to be born and raised in San Francisco. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from St. Mary’s College but was encouraged to join law enforcement by a cop friend. His SFPD career includes assignments at Bayview, Central, Park and Southern Stations as a patrol officer and at Tenderloin Station as a Sergeant. Upon promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, he became responsible for the Market Street foot beat patrol and served as Southern Station Lieutenant of Patrol. He also worked the Airport Bureau’s Traffic and Patrol Divisions before serving Taraval Station Investigation Team Lieutenant, and at Tenderloin Station. Caltagirone became Acting Night Captain in July, 2017 and Mission Station Captain in October, 2017.

"Within the culture of Mission district, you have everything. You have the old school Mission, the new Mission, different families, different cultures and diversity. Everyone has their issues that need to be addressed. I think it’s very important the police and the community work together to find solutions.”
-Captain Gaetano Caltagirone
