- CALL TO ORDER
Vice President Miry called the meeting to order at 5:02 pm. Vice President Dr. Miry reviewed the ground rules. Ms. Battung conducted Roll Call and read the Ramaytush Ohlone Land Acknowledge. Commissioner Dr. Anne Moses arrived at 5:04 pm after the meeting was called to order. President Zwart was excused from this meeting.
- FINDINGS TO ALLOW TELECONFERENCED MEETINGS UNDER CALIFORNIA GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 54953(e). DISCUSSION and possible ACTION
Vice President Miry described the resolution drafted in response to the Mayor’s February 10, 2022 order, allowing members to participate by video from a separate location for COVID-related health reasons and providing members of the public an opportunity to observe and provide public comment either in person or remotely.

Commissioner Rivera asked if the Findings motion was necessary to do every month. It was clarified that it is.

- APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR APRIL 27, 2022

- DIRECTOR’S REPORT DISCUSSION
Director Kimberly Ellis discussed the highlights from the report including:
- The Department co-signing the National Day of Missing and Indigenous Women.
- Marching for abortion rights along-side Mayor London Breed on March 7.
- The Department announced Camille Zapata as the new program manager for civic engagement and political empowerment coming from San Joaquin County where she served as the chief of staff for the only woman currently serving on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors.
- The Department is excited to welcome Camille’s energy as we build out this program area resource and equip women, girls, and nonbinary people with the two information and skills needed to be civically engaged and politically empowered.

- NEW BUSINESS
The Department held a panel, moderated by Director Ellis, to bring awareness to missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and relatives, and to discuss how the Commission and Department can better support the Indigenous community in San Francisco.
Director Ellis and the panel including Morning Star Gali, April McGill, and Michelle Atone discussed:

- Women leaders from the Native American indigenous community
- The Indigenous community that has been historically overlooked and divested in as this is an opportunity to continue to do what the Department can to use its platform and resources to make amends for past trauma to help in the healing process.
- It is important to talk with the indigenous community and ask how people can help as this is a perfect example of being an ally, spreading awareness, and educating people.
- Oftentimes San Francisco plays a leading role in setting the tone for the direction of the nation, shedding light on the healthcare system and how California can better integrate traditional healing modalities into our current and future healthcare systems, as traditional healing practices are often overlooked.
- Traditional healing is critical to the indigenous community as well as having access to their homeland for traditional healers.
- California waterway systems are threatening to include many of the people’s water rights considering the indigenous communities' salmon population.
- As the Department begins to integrate men and boys into the conversation, addressing toxic masculinity, violence against women and colonial roots is essential to our allyship with indigenous communities.
- The panel thanks the department and the commission, explaining that 10-12 years ago, they did not have seat at the table and are grateful for the opportunity to speak and educate people about the indigenous community.
- In addressing the struggle and fight for equity and equality, Director Ellis provides reassurance that we will win, and we will win together.

- GENERAL PUBLIC COMMENT DISCUSSION
April McGill: Thank you for allowing me to make public comment I just wanted to share earlier when I was on the panel to just to knowledge the children and families that have been killed in Uvalde Texas. I think that that's so important for us to remember our children here in the Bay Area who are seeing this on television and being, especially children of color. Let's keep those families in our prayers and let's continue to fight white supremacy in these systems with depression, thank you.

Per the Language Access Ordinance (Chapter 91 of the San Francisco Administrative Code), Chinese, Spanish and or Filipino (Tagalog) interpreters will be available upon requests.
