280 Freeway Design Competition

In spring 2013, Mayor Ed Lee announced an exploration of the potential of removing Highway 280 north of 16th Street in San Francisco. The tradition of removing freeways is not a new one for our city– two neighborhoods, the Embarcadero and Hayes Valley, have enjoyed a renaissance through freeway demolition that healed scarred communities. Submit your ideas for new possibilities for what lies beneath Highway 280.

Walk Friendly Community Award

Walk Friendly Communities is a national recognition program developed to encourage towns and cities across the U.S. to establish or recommit to a high priority for supporting safer walking environments.  According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center,  San Francisco is designated as a Gold-level community due to the city's outstanding planning practices, community pedestrian events, and focus on providing a pedestrian friendly environment.

Socio-Economic Profiles Released for New Supervisorial District

The Planning Department has during the past few years prepared socio-economic profiles with data from the 2010 Census as well as from the American Community Survey for the various neighborhoods in the City, including supervisorial districts. The 2010 Census, released in March of 2011, showed a population growth of 28,502 residents from 776,733 in 2000 as San Francisco’s population surpassed 800,000 for the first time since during the Second World War.
