Free City College

Mayor Lee led an annual $5.4 million plan to provide free tuition for local students attending the City College of San Francisco. The first of its kind nationally, the plan will benefit thousands of California residents living in San Francisco and includes grants for low-income students to use toward health fees, transportation, books and supplies.

Free Childcare for Families Experiencing Homelessness

Mayor Lee recently added $2.1 million to expand the City’s childcare program for families experiencing homelessness. With that allocation, San Francisco is ensuring that every eligible child under the age of five receives free childcare. These children and families will receive continuity of quality care until kindergarten.

San Francisco Youth Jobs+

For the past six years, the Mayor’s Youth Jobs + Initiative has challenged employers of both large and small companies to employ young San Francisco residents by creating paid jobs and internships and by providing training and support to help them succeed. Since its inception, the initiative has provided more than 35,000 young people (ages 16 – 24) with jobs from local employers, non-profits and City government, helping them earn a paycheck and giving them valuable skill-building experiences.

Innovative Learning Programs

Mayor Lee launched the Middle School Leadership Initiative, an innovative partnership with Salesforce.com and SFUSD. This program provides financial investments, new technology, training, and employee volunteers to local middle schools, helping to build the educational foundation for math proficiency. The program is aimed at improving youth interest and performance in the STEM subjects—Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. SFUSD is one of the only districts in the country that has a comprehensive PreK-12 computer science curriculum for all students.

One-Stop Family Resource Center

To ensure that youth and families can effectively access the resources needed to thrive in San Francisco, Mayor Lee supported and chairs the Our Children, Our Families Council (OCOF). OCOF aligns City, school district, and community efforts to improve outcomes for children, youth and families, with an emphasis on those with the greatest needs.  With the active participation from the SFUSD Superintendent (co-chair), key city and school district department heads, and community stakeholders, the mayor is able to set a collective agenda for children and families in our great city.
