In 2015, Mayor Lee invited the Department of Justice to review procedures within the San Francisco Police Department. Following an extensive review, the DOJ issued a list of 272 reforms to implement, including recommendations on use-of-force and community policing. Once the reforms are complete, the SFPD will be a national model for 21st century law enforcement.

To provide the San Francisco Police Department with every available resource, Mayor Lee has led a hiring program to enroll more officers. Under his administration, SFPD has brought on more than 600 new police officers, with an emphasis on increasing diversity within the police force.

In 2014, Mayor Lee supported a $400 million voter-approved bond measure to pay for repairs and improvements that will allow San Francisco to quickly respond to a major earthquake or disaster. Two years later, voters again approved a Mayor Lee-backed bond to fund additional earthquake safety enhancements.
