Mayor Lee’s Statement on Aftermath of Haight-Fillmore Four-Alarm Fire
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the aftermath of Tuesday afternoon’s four-alarm fire at Haight and Fillmore Streets:
“Yesterday’s four-alarm fire at Haight and Fillmore streets displaced 31 San Francisco residents. On behalf of the City, I want to express my sorrow for their loss and relief for their safety.
I thank Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi for leaving the Board of Supervisors meeting at City Hall to join myself and the Fire Chief at the scene of the fire.
I thank Chief Hayes-White for her leadership and the quick and decisive action taken by 125 courageous firefighters who responded to and successfully extinguished this fire. I also want to thank individuals that notified the Department of Emergency Management through 9-1-1 calls and use of the fire alarm. A block captain first notified the City of the blaze, showcasing how valuable the training and preparedness work provided by our city’s Department of Emergency Management is working to keep our residents safe.
As the San Francisco Fire Department continues to investigate the cause of the blaze, the City’s Human Services Agency and the Red Cross are working closely with the 31 displaced residents. For the first time, we will be invoking the residential rent legislation for Good Samaritan temporary occupancy, championed by Supervisor Scott Wiener earlier this year, so that displaced families can more easily find temporary housing and begin the recovery process.”
