Mayor Lee Announces Opening of Fresh & Easy Grocery Store in Underserved Bayview-Hunters Point Neighborhood

5800 Third Street also Celebrates 400 Housing Units & More Small Businesses to Third Street Corridor

— Mayor Edwin M. Lee today cut the ribbon to open Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, the second store in San Francisco and the first grocery store in over 20 years in the underserved Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood.

“I made a commitment to the community to improve Bayview-Hunters Point and make it a place that is safe and healthy for families,” said Mayor Lee. “This project is part of our broader efforts to support the newly revitalized Third Street corridor and provide healthy food choices for families. The opening of Fresh and Easy on Third Street creates jobs for the community and will help make the neighborhood a place where families will want to stay and thrive.”

“Fresh and Easy is making more than just a business investment in the community, they are making an investment in health by providing access to fresh, high-quality food to a neighborhood that has historically lacked access better options for generations,” said District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is a local, neighborhood store committed to providing customers with fresh, wholesome food. Fresh & Easy is a company of Tesco, the United Kingdom’s largest retailer and one of the world’s leading international retailers. Fresh & Easy announced this as its first grocery store site in San Francisco in 2007. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) has played an instrumental role in the project by connecting Fresh & Easy with the developer of the housing units, working in partnership with community organizations who had advocated many years for a full-service, high quality grocery store in the Bayview. The store has hired 40 employees of which 21 employees are hired locally from the Bayview neighborhood.

“We’ve worked hard to create a thoughtful business built on a simple belief: Everyone deserves fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices regardless of where they live,” said Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason. “Our experiences in other underserved neighborhoods like South Los Angeles, Compton and downtown Fresno have been particularly encouraging and illustrate the significant impact bringing more access to fresh, affordable food can have on an entire community.”

Mayor Lee and Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason, in announcing the opening of Fresh & Easy, also announced a Neighborhood Promotions Program, which is a partnership between the grocery store and the community to highlight local businesses along Third Street through a brochure that is available at all checkout stands. Fresh & Easy will also award $1,000 to the Bayview YMCA.

Joined by the Fresh & Easy, Holliday Development, Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group, and community and neighborhood leaders, Mayor Lee today also celebrated the construction of 400 housing units and announced the opening of two restaurants adjacent to the Fresh & Easy grocery store – Limon Rotisserie and Brown Sugar Kitchen – and also the opening of Radio Africa and Kitchen at 4800 Development at Third Street and Oakdale Avenue. Through a partnership with Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center Bayview, OEWD and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency played a key role in convincing these established, unique businesses to open new locations in the Bayview next to the new grocery. Limon Rotisserie will be opening in September, while Brown Sugar Kitchen and Radio Africa and Kitchen will be opening later this Fall, bringing diverse and healthier dining options to the Bayview.

“The synergy of these three new food establishments not only increases Bayview’s product and dining choices, it creates a destination point in Bayview for all,”said Bayview Project Area Committee Chair Angelo King.
