Mayor Lee Celebrates Milestone Opening of Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers & Launches New Central Market Safety Initiative
Ten Community Safety Ambassadors to Serve Central Market Corridor
11/1/11—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today celebrated the grand opening of Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers at Sixth and Market Streets and announced a new public safety initiative. The new Community Safety Ambassadors Initiative will provide Central Market with daytime and early evening ambassadors who will be a resource to residents, area workers, and visitors.
Mayor Lee was joined by Police Chief Greg Suhr, Supervisors Jane Kim and David Chiu, San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) Interim Director Tiffany Bohee and Zendesk CEO Mikkel Svane which recently opened a 70-person office near Sixth and Market Streets. Mayor Lee was also joined by representatives of area arts groups and nonprofit organizations, and the owners of small businesses that are in the process of opening in the area, including AQ restaurant on Mission near Sixth and Huckleberry Bicycles on Market near Seventh Street.
“The opening of Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers marks a major milestone in our efforts to transform Central Market and Sixth Street into thriving commercial areas that create jobs, produce cultural destinations, and meet the needs of workers, visitors and residents,” said Mayor Lee. “We understand, however, that our work is not done here. The Community Ambassador Program is an additional assurance to businesses like Pearl’s and Zendesk that we continue to support endeavors that change and revitalize our streets.”
“I am thrilled to be welcoming Pearl’s onto Sixth Street,” said Supervisor Kim. “Residents and other local merchants have been looking forward to having Sylvia and her famous burgers in the neighborhood for awhile, and Pearl’s is just the kind of local vendor that will help attract a diverse array of small businesses to serve our growing Central Market community.”
This is the fourth location of award-winning Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers. Pearl’s received financing from the SFRA and a loan from the City’s Central Market Cultural District Loan Fund. They will create 16 permanent jobs at the new Sixth and Market location. Pearl’s has received numerous awards, including “Best Burger in San Francisco” from SFWeekly and AOL Cityguide.com. Pearl’s has also been featured in the Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate and on Channel 5’s Eye on the Bay.
“We could not have taken on this corner without the assistance of the Mayor’s Office and the Redevelopment Agency. However, we would never have done this if we weren’t extremely enthusiastic about the change that is underway on Central Market,” said Pearl’s Co-Owner Sylvia Yi with her husband Young. “We are thrilled to be the newest addition to the mix of businesses and arts establishments on Central Market.”
“The opening of Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers is the latest sign of Sixth Street’s continuing transformation,” said SFRA Interim Director Bohee. “Pearl’s joins more than 30 other new tenants, including restaurants like Miss Saigon and cultural organizations like Bindlestiff Studio, which the Redevelopment Agency has supported as part of its revitalization of this vital corridor in the heart of downtown San Francisco.”
As part of the Mayor’s effort to increase public safety, the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs is training community ambassadors to add a visible safety presence in the transit corridor area between Van Ness Avenue and Powell Street. As part of the Central Market Safety Pilot of the Community Ambassador Program, the team will patrol Market Street to provide escorts to and from public transit stops and focus on cleanliness and safety issues.
“This Community Ambassador program is designed to enhance community awareness and safety,” said SFPD Chief Suhr. “The program consists of community safety teams assigned to the Central Market corridor. These teams will work closely with the San Francisco Police Department and other City agencies to provide a safe, visible, and supportive presence for residents, workers and visitors alike.”
