Healthy Youth and Families
The Mayor and the school district want our youth to grow up to be healthy adults who will thrive, live, and stay in San Francisco. Below see the various resources and programs dedicated to making our youth and families healthy in our city.
San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD): Student Nutrition Services
The school district’s Student Nutrition Services department (SNS) provides meal service through the National School Lunch Program for 105 PreK-12 schools and 6 charter schools. At these schools SNS serves over 6,000 breakfasts, 23,000 lunches and 7,000 After School Snacks.
Over the past decade many steps have been taken to improve the SFUSD food systems, including aligning around the highest nutritional standards in the nation and making a bold commitment to feed every hungry child. Since January 2013, fresher meals are being served through SFUSD’s new partnership with Revolution Foods.
In spring 2013, SFUSD began a five-month collaboration with the innovation firm IDEO to rethink the school food system including the spaces, technology, operations, and dining experience. Specifically, they have focused on creating a vision for a student-centered, financially-stable system that engages kids in eating good food. Over 1,300 students, parents, nutrition staff, principals, teachers, administrators, and community partners were involved in this process.
