1. Call to Order and Roll Call


The meeting was called to order at 5:02 pm. Commissioners present: David, Bernick, Wu; Commissioners absent: Commissioner He was out sick. Staff present: Monica Guzman, Adele Failes-Carpenter, Leah LaCroix

Other members of the public present: Iris (SAC), Josh (Lowell HS), Neo (Lowell HS), Polina (Campo Linda HS), Lorelei (Lowell).

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)



Commissioner Wu, seconded by Commission David, moved to approve the agenda. There was no public comment. The motion was approved by acclamation.

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

Commissioner Wu, seconded by Commission David, moved to approve the minutes. There was no public comment. The motion was approved by acclamation.


4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)



There was none.

5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)



A. Review YEA! Updates

Commissioner Bernick asked what youth commissioners would like to do at the Vote16 skill building retreat to have fun and for team building. The committee brainstormed priorities for the retreat, including:

• Team building games
• Understanding the path BOS legislation follows
• Understanding decision makers and current endorsers
• Reviewing the briefing packet
• Public speaking
• Professionalism and confidence

One committee member requested vegetarian food at the retreat.

B. Outreach updates

Committee members shared the following updates:
• The presentation to the Youth Arts Exchange Youth Advisory board was successful and the YAX YAB endorsed and wants to help with a poster contest. Josh reflected that the YEA members need to learn to answer questions about Vote16 more concisely so that presentations do not run over
• Commissioner Rachel Norton wants to meet on Feb. 4th at 5:00pm
• Commissioner Shamann Walton is meeting with Commissioner David on Weds. the 27th
• The SFPL BAY invited a presentation on an upcoming Weds

There was no further public comment.

C. Meet with City College Board of Trustee, Alex Randolph

Committee members welcomed Trustee, Alex Randolph, and gave him an overview of the Vote16 effort. Mr. Randolph asked clarifying questions about the ways in which age would be verified for voters and suggested the city look into the city ID program. Mr. Randolph agreed to endorse the Vote16 effort and suggested committee members follow up with his colleagues as well. Commissioners directed staff to follow up with other members of the board of trustees to request meetings. There was no further public comment.

D. Preparation for upcoming presentations/workshops

Commissioners reviewed dates for outreach discussed earlier in the meeting. There was no public comment.

E. Review committee priorities and plan for Winter training

Committee members affirmed their interest in receiving training on the topics previously discussed.

6. Staff Report



Staff advised committee members that the mayor’s disability council had invited an update on youth commission priorities for Feb. 19th. Commissioner Bernick confirmed she would attend. There was no public comment.

7. Executive Committee Report



There was none.
