Though there was a low number of surveys collected than expected, the key issues found includes: many immigrant students lacked awareness of important resources and services, did not fully understand what AB 540 and the Dream Act was, and lacked participation and interest in local government.

C. Confirm priorities

Committee members discussed priorities as it relates to immigrant youth and the Youth Commission’s budget priorities. Commissioner Yang informed her peers that they would have to think about priorities as it relates to funding that affects the lives of immigrant youth.

Commissioner Ontiveros brought up the importance of youth employment for all immigrant youth. Ontiveros and Rios stressed the difficulty of finding employment and internship opportunities if you were an undocumented youth. Undocumented youth benefit from stipend programs, but would benefit more if they were able to work more.
