1. Call to Order and Roll Call for Attendance

 


The meeting was called to order at 9:34 am.

Commissioners present: Jillian Wu, Chen, Guo, Avalos, David, Berliner, Davis, Cardenas, Li, Bernick, Edelhart, Zheng.

Commissioners absent: Marshall-Fricker, Listana, Joyce Wu

Staff present: Allen Lu, Adele Failes-Carpenter

There was quorum.

Commissioner Joyce Wu noted present at 11:34 am. Commissioner Listana noted present at 12:34 pm.

 

 

 

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

 


Commissioner David motioned to approve the agenda, seconded by Commissioner Zheng. There was no public comment. The motion was approved by acclamation.

 

 

 

 

 

3. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)


Members of the public Ellen Shaffer of the Center for Policy Analysis and the Trust Women Silver Ribbon campaign; Luisa Sicairos and Joe Brenner from Trust Women Silver Ribbon, and Kelly from the American Assocation of University Women gave public comment stressing the importance of youth voice in opposing the banners being hung on city lamp posts on Market Street for the January 24th Walk for Life event which read “Abortion Hurts Women.” The speakers stressed the importance of having accurate public health information displayed on public property.

There was no further public comment.

 

 

 

 

 

4. Presentations (Discussion Only)

 


A. The Power of Youth Action
Presenter: Amelia Roskin-Frazee, Make It Safe Project Founder

Ms. Amelia Roskin-Frazee, founder of the Make It Safe Project and a youth leader with GLSEN, spoke to youth commissioners about the issues faced by LGBTQ in schools and the actions youth can take to make a difference.

B. Budget Bonanza: Presentations on the City Budget
Presenter(s): Commissioner Jillian Wu; Luisa Sicairos, Citywide TAY Advisory Board member; Nicholas Persky, Youth Commission Alum; Adele Failes-Carpenter, Youth Commission Director

Former commissioners Nicholas Persky and Luisa Sicairos and Commissioner Jillian Wu, led a presentation on the city budget process, including the timeline for budget advocacy. There was no public comment.

C. Policy Research and Resolution Writing
Presenter(s): Youth Commissioners Joshua Cardenas and Michel Li

Commissioners Cardenas and Li led a resolution writing workshop wherein they explained the use of ‘whereas’ and ‘resolved’ clauses. Commissioners participated in a ‘whereas’ clause scramble using past BOS and YC resolutions on transit issues and practiced writing mock ‘whereas’ clauses. There was no public comment.
