1. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order at 5:06 p.m. Commissioners present: Brian Chu, Ariel Yu. SAC reps present: Kristen Sinclair. Staff present: Phimy Truong. There was quorum.

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)


There was no public comment.

Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Chu, moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved by acclamation.

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Chu, moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of March 6, 2013. This motion was approved by acclamation.

5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)


A. Staff report

Ms. Truong provided the committee with the following update: the board’s joint select committee will be having a hearing on Proposition H Expenditure Plan and Reauthorization in late April; Prop H is more commonly known as the Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEEF) which provides funding for pre-school support; sports, libraries, the arts, and music; and wellness centers, . Commissioners Yu expressed interest in attending this hearing and will report back to the committee.

There was no official action taken.

B. Committee community engagement plan and off-site event-planning

Committee members then reviewed their goals of having an offsite full Youth Commission meeting around credit recovery. Committee members spent a bulk of the meeting time developing questions and planning the agenda for this off site meeting. The goals were to receive a presentation on credit recovery, learn more about how current credit recovery options are evaluated by students, and learn more about what credit recovery options will be offered for students this summer. Commissioner Chu directed staff to invite school district staff to present on the current status of credit recovery programs. After the committee has confirmed a presentation from the school district, SAC representative Sinclair will invite her peers on the SAC to attend the meeting.

There was no official action taken.

C. Review other committee priorities

Commissioner Yu gave an update on her work around special education inclusive services. She will be setting up meetings with organizations who work with special education; and will continue to reach out to the Best Buddies organization work around integrated and leadership development for youth with developmental disabilities. Commissioners asked clarifying questions. There was no official action taken.

6. Items to Report to Executive Committee (Action Item)


There was no public comment.

Commissioner Chu, seconded by Commissioner Yu, moved to approve the following items to report to the Executive Committee: the committee spent most of the meeting planning for an offsite meeting in May; and would like the meeting to be focused on credit recovery options at the school district. The motion was approved by acclamation.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:41 p.m.
