1. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order at 5:04pm. Committee members present: Youth Commissioners Brian Chu, Ariel Yu. Student Advisory Council Representative present: Carmen Chan. Staff present: Student Advisory Council Coordinator Judson Steele, Youth Commission Coordinator of Community Outreach and Youth Commission Director Mario Yedidia.

 

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)


Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Chu, moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

Youth Commissioner Rachel Brodwin was noted present at 5:11pm.

3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)

Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Brodwin, moved to approve the minutes. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)

Jen Verzosa, a columnist with The Guardsmen newspaper of City College of San Francisco (and a former Student Advisory Council Representative in the 2000-2001 term), introduced herself and thanked the committee for allowing her to be present.

 

5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)

A. Check in

Committee members checked in by sharing one positive and one challenging aspects of their past week. There was no official action taken.

Youth Commission Coordinator of Community Outreach and Civic Engagement then led commissioners through a powerpoint presentation describing her work plan and role at the Youth Commission. She responded to commissioners’ questions. No official action was taken.

B. Review committee notes from mid-year retreat

Issues in City & SFUSD
• City College.
Commissioners considered various articles regarding the current accreditation crisis affecting City College of San Francisco. They requested that staff coordinate a presentation from representatives of the Save City College coalition at the next committee meeting.

• 29 Bus
Commissioners tabled work on this issue.

• Special Education
Commissioner Yu discussed her upcoming meeting with a Mission High School special education teacher. Student Advisory Council Coordinator Judson Steele committed to securing a representative from the school district administration to come speak at the next Education Committee meeting.

• Lack of night school
Student Advisory Council representative Chan discussed the decreasing accessibility of night school in the public schools during the past few years. Commissioner Brodwin suggested this issue be combined with the credit recovery follow-up item below.

• School safety
Representative Chan agreed to send an email to school district staff to determine whether the district has a policy inquiring about whether there is a district-wide policy on locking doors on campuses and what the plan and status is for having security cameras on campuses.

• Restorative Justice
The committee decided to table this item and encourage commissioner Chiu

• Credit recovery follow- up
• Westfield/Prop: Contract

Commissioner Brodwin gave a brief update on the Executive Committee’s work on the Youth of the Year award.
