1. Call to Order and Roll Call

Chair LaCroix called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM.

Commissioners present: Armstrong, Bonner, Brodwin, Carrion, Holloway, LaCroix, Liang, Marshall-Fricker, Tu Mutch, Ontiveros, Persky, Shackelford, Sun, Yang. Commissioners absent: Chan. Commissioners tardy: Baer (arrived at 1:20PM). Staff present: Yedidia, Truong.

2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)

There was no discussion or public comment.

Commissioner Bonner, seconded by Commissioner Holloway moved to approve the agenda of January 21, 2012. The motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.

4. Youth Commission Business (All Items to Follow Discussion Only)

 

A. Check-In/Team Builder/Ice Breaker
Presenters: Commissioner Tu Mutch and Staff

Commissioner Tu Mutch started the mid-year retreat by leading her peers through a series of interactive team-building exercises.

No official action was taken.

B. Reflection on first five months
Presenters: Commissioner LaCroix and Staff

Commissioner LaCroix led her peers through a reflection activity regarding the commission’s work in the last 6 months and individual commissioners’ work and role as an active commissioner. Staff also shared thoughts on getting work done in the remaining months of each commissioner’s term. Staff stressed the importance of each commissioner’s duty to be accountable and representative of the unmet needs of youth in San Francisco.

Commissioners then spent some time reflecting on their work as individual commissioners, in committee, and as a whole commission. Commissioners then discussed ways in which they were going to move forward and fulfill their role in representing youth voice in San Francisco.

Chair La Croix called the meeting to recess at 12:07 p.m.

Chair La Croix called the meeting back to order at 1:07 p.m. and rounded commissioners up for the second half of the retreat.

C. City Budget Workshop
Presenters: Commissioners LaCroix, Holloway, Staff

Commissioner Tu Mutch introduced the budget workshop by sharing her personal experiences in becoming involved in the budget process and why it is important to have youth voice as part of the process.

Commissioner Holloway and Mr. Yedidia then lead commissioners through a detailed overview of the City’s annual budget process. There was time for question and answer. Commissioners discussed the importance of the budget process and how their work can link up with the budget process.

Chair LacCroix then called the meeting to recess at 2:20 p.m.

Chair LaCroix called the meeting back to order at 2:40 p.m.

Commissioner Yang then jumped in to explain to her peers the timeline for the City’s annual budget process. Commissioners asked clarifying questions and engaged in a lively discussion.

Commissioner Holloway then led his peers through a budget bingo game to further internalize the knowledge they had just learned about the budget.

No official action was taken.

5. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 4:21 p.m.
