1. Call to Order and Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 4:12pm. Commissioners present: Leah LaCroix, Mia Tu Mutch, Happy (Huimin) Yang. Commissioners absent: Rachel Brodwin, Robin Bonner. There was quorum. Staff present: Phimy Truong.
2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)
Commissioner LaCroix, seconded by Commissioner Tu Mutch moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.
3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)
A. April 11, 2012
Commissioner LaCroix, seconded by Commissioner Tu Mutch moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of April 11, 2012. The motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.
B. March 28, 2012
Commissioner LaCroix, seconded by Commissioner Tu Mutch moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of March 28, 2012. The motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.
4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)
There was none.
5. Staff Report/Update on Communications, etc.
Ms. Truong updated committee members on the status of free MUNI for low income youth. The coalition has been working on getting regional funding and turning people out to two upcoming MTC meetings in June. Commissioner Tu Mutch asked if YC staff could help with providing BART tickets or drive commissioners out to the MTC meetings in Oakland.
6. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)
A. Establishing the agenda for the June 4, 2012 full Youth Commission meeting
Committee members agreed to agendized the following items for the meeting of June 4, 2012: remarks from Supervisor Mar’s office about a public hearing the Supervisor has called for increased funding to the San Francisco Unified School District; a presentation from Eddy Zheng and the Community Youth Center’s Bayview Youth Advocates; a first reading of Commissioner Tu Mutch’s resolution on urging the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to support the establishment of a statewide office of the Homeless Youth Advocate A.B. 256; a first reading of Commissioner Tu Mutch’s resolution on urging the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to support A.B. 1856 which would require caregivers of foster youth to be trained in LGBT cultural competency; and a first reading of Commissioner Tu Mutch’s resolution on urging the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to support the ban on ineffective and harmful conversion therapy for persons under 18 in SB 1172.
B. Update on Youth Commission Business
Committee members discussed how to celebrate the end of the year with their peers on the Commission. Members decided to have a celebratory dinner after the last Youth Commission meeting, and asked staff to look into that.
C. Update on Officer Duties: Legislative Affairs, Outreach, Media & Public Relations
Commissioner Tu Mutch shared with her colleagues that the YC’s online media presence has been pretty strong. Commissioner Brodwin and Bonner were not at the meeting to give an update on their respective officer roles.
7. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 5:10pm.
