1. Call to Order and Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 5:07 pm. Youth commissioners present: Brian Chu, Rachel Brodwin, Ariel Yu. Student Advisory Council representatives present: Kristen Sinclair, Cecilia Young. Staff present: Phimy Truong, Youth Commission; Judson Steele, Student Advisory Council. There was quorum.
2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)
Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Brodwin, moved to approve the agenda. The motion was approved unanimously by acclamation. There was no public comment.
3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)
A. September 19, 2012
Commissioner Brodwin, seconded by Commissioner Yu, moved to approve the minutes of September 19, 2012. The motion was approved by acclamation. There was no public comment.
4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)
Brandon Kwong, San Francisco State University student introduced himself.
Sam Attall, San Francisco State University student introduced himself.
Alexandra Waite, San Francisco State University student introduced herself.
Brett Abel, San Francisco State University student introduced himself.
5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)
A. Overview of Coleman Advocates Education Equity Campaign
Presenter: Kevine Boggess, Y-MAC Program Lead & Organizer, Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth
Kevine Boggess gave a detailed overview of Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth, and his work as the Y-MAC Program Lead & Organizer. Mr. Boggess discussed Coleman’s education equity work with students in the San Francisco Unified School District. Commissioners asked clarifying questions regarding Coleman’s work around the achievement gap.
Mr. Boggess invited committee members to Coleman’s community meeting on the achievement gap on October 16th, 2012.
B. Debrief Board of Supervisors’ City & School District Committee meeting of September 27, 2012
Mr. Steele, then gave an overview of the Board of Supervisors’ City & School District committee meeting of September 27, 2012. Mr. Steele then handed out the presentation that the SFUSD had provided at that meeting. Committee members spent some time poring over the presentation.
C. Review committee S.M.A.R.T. goals
Committee members spent time reviewing their S.M.A.R.T. goals and drafted an outline of items to work on at the next committee meeting.
D. Next steps on developing policy priorities
Members agreed to meet again on October 17th, and have the next meeting be a working and research meeting.
6. Items to Report to Executive Committee (Action Item)
Commissioner Yu, seconded by Commissioner Chu, moved to report the following items to the Executive Committee: the Education committee has received a presentation from Coleman Advocates and will be focusing their work on assessing the achievement gap data, looking at national achievement gap data and strategies and credit recovery options, and being involved in community meetings. The motion was approved by acclamation.
There was no public comment.
7. Executive Committee Report (Discussion Only)
Commissioner Brodwin gave a brief update on the Executive Committee. There was no public comment.
